I think I've got most of the bits I need.

But what's best for the plastic bits like the bumpers?

Do I use the same products as for the metal bodywork?

And what for the non-metal pillars?

All advice gratefully received. What do I put here then?

If its painted, use the same as its the paint you want to protect, if its the black/dark gray plastic I use a autoglym bumper and trim gel, I think its cracking stuff.

On bare black plastic like the bottom of doors, the bottom of windscreen, mudflaps etc that over years goes grey and awful looking I have on several cars applied the cheap Chinese 9H ceramic coating seen widely on ebay etc. This stuff is a real game-changer for me, one application on all the faded plastic bits I have used it on brings it back to new looking. 2007 TDV8 VSE

That's the one I use, a bit cheaper in Oz at A$6.99. I have used it on the paintwork on 2 cars that I am not to fussed on and am pretty impressed. Would I put it on a car that I cared dearly for, I am not sure?. On paint, you have to be very careful to get it on and polished off quickly. I wash, clay bar, go over with Maguire's ultimate compound, de-grease then apply 9h about a m2 at a time. Immediately lightly buff with a microfibre cloth, do the next m2 the go back to firmly buff the previous section. A real palava but worth it. It works well on Alloy wheels too, noticeably slows the dust build up. I did one wheel only on the front to see a difference over a week. 2007 TDV8 VSE

My paint looks OK from 20ft away when it's washed but close up there's quite a lot of scratches, I've got a number of polishes and various grades of cutting compounds to try on it but the weather here is awful so I'm waiting for the sun

Mine is the same - a lot of little scratches all over both sides, plus a couple of places where flared wheel arches have been hit in car parks and have removed tiny bits of paint down to the white beneath.

There are a few local places we visit regularly that have narrow roads with hawthorn or holly hedges where squeezing past is the only option so it's likely to be an ongoing problem. I'm a complete novice with this as I don't remember ever cleaning the old Disco or 110's and the Skoda we have gets a free spruce up when I take it to the dealer for its annual MOT or service. But the wife seems to think the elderly FFRR should be kept looking "nice".

I'd have thought that any cutting-type compound would have weird effects on what I have assumed was paint covered in thin clear lacquer.

I'm watching this thread in the hope of seeing some pointers to cheap and very easy ways to keeping all parts of the vehicle looking reasonable. Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????

if you want to make a bit of an effort to get rid of scratches on the cheap get a buffer pad from ebay and just use it in a cordless drill. use with one of the clear coat safe compounds, don't press hard and keep the pad moving at all times. lots of vids on youtube for guidance. you will never make it perfect like a pro but for little $$ will make a noticeable improvement https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4x-4-inch-polis...swi0xz8y~m 2007 TDV8 VSE
