Sorry to drag an old thread up from the dead here, but I was idly googling and noticed this..... My understanding is that BMW did have a V12 in mind for the L322 - basically the one out of the 7 series in the same way that the V8 was lifted from the 5 series. However, shortly after the shell had been designed to accomodate the V12, BMW developed variable valve timing. The M62 got it, to become the M62TU, but the V12 with its low production volume did not warrant the effort. So now they had a much lighter and less thirsty V8 that made as near as dammit the same power and torque as the V12. No brainer! Well the 60° V12 is narrower than a 90° V8, and about the same length as the straight six diesel, so dimensionally it should fit. |
