gearbox oil

Can anyone tell me which gearbox oil I should use for a full flush for my 4.4 petrol 07
Here in the garage they want to use Mobil ATF 71141
The dealer wants to use Esso LT 71141 or Valvoline maxlife ATF 324
In some posts here I read ZF lifeguard6

What's the "truth?" if there is any.
Thanks in advance
Robert

If you have a 2007 petrol model with the Jaguar engine then your transmission is the 6-speed unit (ZF 6HP26) which requires ZF Lifeguard Fluid 6.

Mobil ATF LT71141 is the correct fluid for the 5-speed transmission (ZF 5HP24) fitted to the 4.4 V8 petrol models with the BMW M62 engine.

Thanks Phil. That's what I thought. Was amazed (but then not that amazed) that the dealer here is out of tune with RR. They are absolutely useless normally...and yes mine is the Jag engine

Look at the Ravenol website. I believe they actually make the oil for ZF. Half the price from them. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

They do indeed do a gearbox specific 6hp fluid which is designed for use in the ZF gearboxes. Whether they make it for ZF I’m not sure, however ZF is a automotive engineering company not a lubricant manufacturer.... so someone makes it for them.

I just put 2 and 2 together. German gearbox + German oil manufacturer.
Either way it's good oil. Use it myself 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

Is Ravenol ATF 8 HP fluid the same, therefore, as ZF's Lifeguard 8 for the 8 speed ZF box?
Ravenol sell 4 litres for £66 which seems WAY cheaper than ZF Lifeguard which is more like £117 from Opie Oils.
Exactly the same stuff, but with a different label on the bottle?

Have a look at the offering from Smith & Allen:

https://www.smithandallan.com/products/tra...ternative/

They have been in business for a fair few years and their Lifeguard 6 Alternative seems to be well received on the various forums I visited when doing my research and is very competitively priced.

I used this in my 5.0SC which has the ZF 6HP28 box (which uses the same fluid) with no problems at all. My only worry when I started pumping the new fluid in was that it is red rather than a golden colour. A quick call to Smith & Allen tech support confirmed that they use that colour for identification purposes.

For my mind, a 20lt container of this stuff, for sensible money, meant that I was able to perform several drains and refills which would have been close to having full gearbox flush.

Cheers, Mark

Wow that stuff from Smith & Allen is cheap. M1375.4 is the spec number to go by..
ZF obviously do not make their own oil so ZF lifeguard has to be another's oil relabelled. So why pay their prices. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

I agree Grofus - ZF do not actually manufacture oil and their gearboxes seem to be fitted to other manufacturers cars who all seem to have their own "special" fluid.

I would be very interested in Phil's thoughts on this.

Cheers, Mark

Well yes, but does "it's suitable" mean "it'll do, sort of" or does it mean "it's exactly the same stuff just with our own label on it since we actually supply ZF"?

I suspect the latter, since (as pointed out) ZF isn't an oil manufacturer, but some confirmation would be good. I guess I should ask them!

Thanks guys, just been looking at this offer here with Ravenol

https://www.landers-shop.fr/kit-de-revisio...85_301.cfm

the price difference between this and ZF isn't that big...

that Smith and allan stuff is cheap, but would you trust your gearbox to swallow that????
