I need 4 tyres on the Fatty with 20" wheels. The problem is I could really use an all terrain tyre but have read that they are not so good on wet roads. I live in West Ireland so it's always raining. An all weather tyre would also be useful.
The only real option I can find are Grabber AT3 for that size rim.
Those of you that have such tyres, how bad or good on wet roads are they? Also, what are they like on a wet field. Any real world experience would be welcomed.
Or are there any other choices I have missed?

If you want all weather they now do the scorpion verde in 255/50 20.

Just fitted a set to my wheels and they will be going on the car soon. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It's always a compromise with tyres.

My winter tyres are Goodyear Duratrac 255/55R19, which are also available in 255/55R20, the 19" size being homologated for the 322. It is, I think rated to about 100mph, so if you are looking for more than that it would not be suitable. I see it is rated E for wet weather grip, (as I think is the Grabber AT3) but I find them perfectly OK for normal driving, i.e. prudent and not especially sporty. You will take longer to stop if there is an emergency in front of you. It is fine on fields and farm tracks, not quite as grippy as a full mud terrain, but much better on road than a full mud terrain too. You'll not get much snow, but I have found them fine in snow too. They are not as good as winter tyres on ice, especially once a bit worn. They are a bit noisier than road tyres, and get noisier with wear, but OK for me.

The summer tyre I have used most is the Pirelli Scorpion Zero, in 255/55R19. It seems to be rated B for wet grip and I found them OK, but of course much less competent off road, as the tread gets clogged more quickly. I recall a pretty stressful drive along the bank of the Blackwater at Lismore with worn Scorpion Zeros, the Duratracs would have given much more confidence.

I've not tried the Grabbers. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Yeah, I realise tyres will always be compromise. I'll do more driving on wet roads than not. But off road ability would be handy often enough.
Hence the questions. I have Scorpion zeros on now but they are not much good on a wet field and are getting low. The summer temperatures don't get warm enough to justify a full summer tyre and winters are not that cold for full on winter tyre. TBH, the Scorpion ATR looks to be the one for me but can't find it for a 20" rim. All terrain tyres are not common in 20". Seen plenty of 19".

I have Cooper Zeons on my L405. They seem quite good in the wet but they are wider than standard, so maybe that compensates.

You could have a look at the General Grabber AT (not the AT3). A couple of friends have used them, one on a 3.6TDV8, admittedly in 19" and was happy. There is a 255/55R20. It is described as a 50:50 on/off road tyre, I have not checked the wet performance statistics though. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Just for the record, your tyres need to be rated for the maximum published speed of the vehicle, not the speed you may actually drive at. A very good way to get points on your licence or worst case, void your insurance.  Bish.

Thanks Bishbosh, the OP will need to check the position on this in Ireland, I see the Grabber AT3 has a higher speed rating.
Perhaps I should look at them for the future, even though I have been very happy with the Duratracs.

I see that the 255/55R19 Duratrac is rated 112mph as against the 255/55R20 at 99mph. Interesting in this context that LR have the Duratrac 255/55R19 as a homologated tyre for the 322 (I suppose that may apply worldwide and rules may be different elsewhere) and of course the Discovery 5 SVX is rated at 100mph despite its 5.0SC engine, presumably because it has Duratrac 275/55R20s. I have cleared my Duratracs with my insurers (as also the Goodyear MT/Rs which preceded them, I think rated 99mph?) but maybe they are not up on the speed ratings. Only Range Rovers since 1988

The Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season in 255/55 R20 110Y XL (LR) TL are speed rated Y which is 186mph.

They're also LR marked meaning factory fit option.

I have 2 main requirements from the tyre. 1) Good wet grip. 2) Some off road capabilities. (Muddy fields, loose gravel type terrain)
The wet grip is a must. Off road ability would be handy often enough to want it.
From what I've read, off road ability comes at the cost of wet grip. So, I guess I have my answer.
Fit an all season tyre like verde's and........
buy another Fatty and put mud terrain tyres on it. If only.

But seriously, how much is wet grip affected with an all terrain compared to a Verde, for instance. That is the crux of it.

For what it's worth I fitted Verdes on my 5.0 S/C fatty and they have been fine in the wet and snow so far this winter.

Well I have had 3 sets of General AT's and 1 set of Cooper AT3 and all have been fine if not better in the wet. To be honest I think the AT's are better in the wet as they evacuate water quicker due to the tread depth and don't aquaplane as easily as the std tyres. We have Grabber AT2s on the 110 and Disco3.

The ATs were horrendous and a real step backwards. Not needed to try the AT3s yet.
