Replaced Alternator & Battery, fuel gauge not working

Apologies first, have looked through the ‘fuel gauge’ search results but not spotted solution!

My 2010my (electronic dash) 3.6 broke down last weekend and was initially diagnosed by Green Flag as battery issue. We bought a new battery from Halfords and he fitted it. Car started fine but when he checked there was an issue with the alternator.

Got car recovered to my local specialist and they replaced the alternator and carried out a full service plus changed the diff and transfer fluids. The new battery was dead when the car arrived there so they put on another new battery in order to carry out the works required, whilst the first new battery was on charge.

The first new battery was re-fitted (having been tested and fully charged) prior to me collecting the car yesterday. Having paid the bill (🙁), I jumped in and started up but was surprised to see the fuel warming light on - it was lowish on Saturday when I broke down, but not that low. Drove to the nearest petrol station and filled up but as I got towards full, diesel started overflowing from the fuel filler. When I then started the car the gauge still showed empty and the ‘range’ was still showing——-

I took it straight back to the garage and it’s still there! Anyone got any ideas please?

Fuel gauge problem most likely unrelated to battery and alternator.

The problem is a bad connection to the fuel gauge sender in the tank. Very common.

Fold forward both rear seats.
Remove brackets that hold seats down when in place.
Remove plastic side trim at both sides, to allow carpet to lift.
Lift carpet and tie it up, allowing access to top of fuel tank
Remove lid from RHS of tank, behind driver seat (RHD)
Remove fuel lines and multi plugs for access
Remove multi plug on inside of lid
I then twisted each pin very carefully inside multi plug to make tight fit and good electrical contact
Squirt of contact cleaner never does any harm
Refit, as they say, is reverse of removal
Make sure the seal is properly in place around the lid, otherwise copious diesel leaks when tank is full (ask me how I know!)

Worth checking that gauge works before everything is refitted, but do connect pipes.

Hope that helps. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Fuel gauge crimps problem is well known.

A quick search on here will show you what I mean better than I can describe it Smile What do I put here then?

Thanks both for your replies. I thought that the fault was too much of a coincidence not to be related to the work carried out and failed alternator/battery, but maybe I was wrong (not for the first time!) and it’s just bad luck!

Does the fuel gauge crimp problem give an erratic reading I.e. innacurate up and down variable or can it also leave the gauge showing empty and range blank as in my case?

Thanks again and I will pass on the suggestion to the garage.

Usually shows empty and zero range. Can magically return to normal for a short while after going over a bump. , only to fail again soon after. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Just spoken with the garage and they are waiting for software update from the manufacturer of their diagnostic machine. Apparently there are further faults (temp gauge, Rev counter etc not working) but their diagnostic machine will currently not talk to my car! They think the dashboard has lost its memory and want to reset it.

Still waiting for software update! Getting more than a little fed up.

I rang Autologic direct the other day and they were very cagey and couldn’t/wouldn’t give me any firm information. The customer care manager would only say that his software team would be ringing my specialist later that day with an update.

Rang my specialist today to find that the boss had gone on holiday and that they still didn’t have any news. They think it might be ready early next week.......!

Pretty disgusted at the whole episode and disappointed at both Autologic and my specialist. Have been using this specialist for 10yrs plus but won’t be going back again. Thinking about collecting it and taking it to a main dealer to see if they can resolve software issue.
