Intermittent headlight failure

Since the cold weather has set in i keep getting an intermittent single headlight dipped beam failure. Sometimes its only the passenger side and on other occasions its only the drivers side. I then need to switch off ( and then on) the light switch a few times for the dipped beam to come back on. The dash message comes up as either "check front light" or "check dipped beam". There is no consistency as to which side the headlight fails or to the associated message. All this has happened a few times now since the cold weather has set in. (it was fine all summer).

Ive read up it could be either the ballast module or igniter and to change them over to see if the fault follows the part. However i seem to have the headlight failure on both sides - albeit individually at different times. So any pointers as what seems to be causing this issue?

I had this on the 02-05 square headlights, and never worked out whether it was the ballast resistor or the ignitor. First one side went and then the other.

I found it was cheaper and simpler to solve the problem by buying a complete light unit off eBay. Current:

I had this and solved it by replacing the lighting module

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Xenon-HID-Headli...2749.l2649

Cost was £38 brand new and takes 5 minutes to fit. Its behind and below the nearside Headlight with 3 torx screws.
Remove the air duct first and its easy. I think I did a little write up on a previous post.

Best wishes
Glen
