Pawl's 3.6 L322 TDV8

After joining the forum 3 wks ago we've now got our late 2006 FF RR TDV8 with 123,000 miles & started working on it's various faults.
Cleaned up, it looks OK - although there are a few bits of damaged paint to sort at some point.



As said when I joined, the info on here had given me the confidence to buy a car that was significantly down on power, smoked badly under acceleration & had various other faults - on the possibly rash assumption I probably knew the causes & could fix it without breaking the bank.
In the end I was lucky & the smoking turned out to be the well documented split inlet hose problem, but this time 1 of the right angle inlet plenum to inlet manifold hoses, not an intercooler hose. Sorted for £20, 1 hour & heavily bruised knuckles trying to get the old hose off & new hose on.



While sorting the plenum hose I also discovered 1 of the rear "straight" plenum hoses was oily, but fortunately this turned out to be just loose, not split.
Fuel consumption has improved from a worrying average 13.8mpg to at least 18mpg around town & what maybe upto 30mpg on a run. Performance is now what I expected !

An annoying rattle from the back of the rear seat area turned out to be a live shotgun cartridge bouncing about in the recess where the rear damper mtg comes into the body Shocked !



The car also has 1 of the infamous steering wheel tilt problems. As bought, the wheel was stuck in the fully up position, which was less than brilliant for comfortable driving - lol.
I've now discovered the motor works, but was dis-connected because when the car is switched on, the tilt mechanism tries to crush your legs because it can't remember where it started from.
From the fantastic info in this forum I think I might be able to fix the problem without replacing the motor - as it appears to work smoothly, but just slips when it retracts fully up. Time will tell.. ..

I'm sure I'll be back with further updates as I knock the faults off (Reversing camera, whistling windscreen, ext. door handles almost not working etc etc). Paul,

Looks well does that and yes they certainly are a project.

I keep meaning to make a list of all the faults on mine so I can work my way through it but doubt I'd have enough ink in my pen!

Really nice looking example you've picked up there. Cairns Blue (and that gorgeous interior!) was one of the colours I wanted myself when looking for one to buy. I can eak 33MPG out of my own 3.6 '58 TDV8 on a run down to London (running exclusively on Shell FuelSaver Diesel) so your estimates of 30 are probably right on the money.

Is that a Discovery 2 I can see parked behind it?

Paulus1978, yes, we're pleased with it - especially since we've got rid of the horrible air "freshener" smell that we were worried was hiding something worse. Fortunately not though!

My steering wheel kept doing that, then had a flat battery if left for 2-3 days.
Turns out the bluetooth and TMC module was causing a 1.2amp drain, once that was sorted and the battery up to full charge the steering wheel started working properly again. Porsche 911 (996)

2 of the other problems, I've not mentioned are a battery that goes flat every 2 or 3 days & a Bluetooth module that appears to have a mind of it's own - lol.
Looks like there maybe a link worth investigating. I'll start by measuring the current drain if I can & then disconnect the Bluetooth module & re- check. Paul,

For now just unplug it, and then take the optical cables out of the block and put them together to keep the MOST ring as a ring, otherwise you will get no nav etc.

You can use some small rubber hose or just tape the ends together.

The TMC modules can go a bit funny too causing a drain, as TMC is useless I would unplug that too, and do the same with the MOST cable on that. Porsche 911 (996)

Front Upper Suspension Arms / Knocking Noise - Now Gone !

Finally got round to to replacing the front upper suspension arms yesterday.
The bushes at the chassis end had looked well worn for a few months and I was fairly certain they were likely to be the cause of the knock noise I was getting while putting full steering lock on at very low speed.
Changing them was easy enough - apart from the time wasted trying to remove 1 of the ball-joints which was worn enough to need replacing while I was doing the arms.
I thought I'd just be able to knock it out from above after removing the torx screws - but it wouldn't budge. I ended up using a slotting disc in the angle grinder & cutting the ball joint to pieces before the remains could be knocked out.

Anyway, all back together & no more knock noise & the suspension doesn't thump as much when going over speed bumps or pot holes - Great result Very Happy

While in the wheel arches I took out both wheel arch liners & removed a few kilos of small stones & mud that had got past the edge of the liners at the back of the wheel arches..
Surprisingly & very positively , there was no sign of rust anywhere - despite no obvious underseal on top of the paint Thumbs Up Paul,

lol - yes.
I'd almost got all of the issues with the Disco 2 under control (might regret saying that!), so I decided I'd have another Land Rover project to keep me occupied!

Cubby Box Phone Cradle Removal

I decided to remove the OE phone cradle connector on our 2006 TDV8 as I got fed up of not being able to use the top part of the cubby box for storing a phone. With the cradle in place, the space is too narrow for even a standard Samsung Galaxy mobile. The connector by all accounts only permits very limited functionality if you can find the relevant 2G ( ! ) phone & cradle from 2006 or 2007.



It's a simple 15 min max job - involving opening the lower cubby box,
Removing the 6 small Torx screws that hold the upper part with the cradle & then lift it up & away to access the connector & associated wiring

You then just disconnect the wiring connector (it won't generate any fault codes or issues), then unscrew the 4 slightly larger screws that hold the cradle connector & remove it.

Your now left with a rectangular "hole" that if you did nothing would allow things to drop from the top part of the cubby into the bottom - Not ideal !
Simple solution was Black Duct tape cut to size over the aperture & then re-fit the top cover & re-fit the 6 screws.


Slightly neater finish achieved from above by careful cutting of a piece of dense black foam to fit the recess.




Job Done, phone now fits - or anything else you want to locate there ! Paul,
