Just reading about how speculators are apparently 'determined to push to price of oil over $100 per barrel'. That will result in petrol price increasing to at least £1.30

It's nice in theory - but I still have to go to work etc so not sure how I could limit the petrol I use. I could turn my FBH heater off I suppose. Then again, maybe not. |

I think it could work well, for example if enough people did it, just a 10% drop in demand for fuel could mean that the oil speculators could get severely hurt by a drop in the wholesale price, wouldn't that be lovely! Would only need to be for a week or so. In fact if the campaign got enough momentum it could succeed before it began since oil futures could drop just if the speculators believed the campaign could be successful. In these days of social networking I think it could work pretty well!

It is all anyway. It is standard market practice to blame speculators for a move in prices that one doesn't like.

What a load of b hit. Firstly do you deny the news reports that speculators are determined to push the price of crude oil over $100 per barrel? If so you're in denial of reality. It's gone up from $70 just months ago, demand hasn't gone up that much, and it'll come down when they've taken their profits. Secondly, what's this c p about profligate use of oil? Any Range Rover owner can be accused of profligate use of oil, but it's a stupid accusation based on the absolute b ks pedalled by the 'climate change' lobby. Eco-menatalists are always on about 'profligate' use of oil, but with the prices we have to pay of course we're not profligate. We use fuel for heating when we need to be warmer, we use it as a propellant when we need to move, how does that make us profligate? At the same time we in the West invest billions of pounds annually to make use of fuel in both contexts more efficient. If you don't like use of inefficient cars, then with all due respect what are you doing in a Range Rover forum? Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining! |

Can you write a letter to my boss explaining that every other Friday I'm not going to come in to work then? You will also need to write one to my mortgage company explaining why I cant afford to pay the mortgage. I don't pour petrol down the drain or spread it on the garden! I use 100% of the petrol I use - if I were to only use 90% of my current usage I would have to - not use the car? It's all very well and good - but back in the real world, where the gov takes 75% or whatever it is of that £1.30 they are the ones that need to be lobbied. Don't get me wrong I'm a conservative through and through, but where is the fuel stabiliser as pledged in their manifesto!? |

No one else ever mentions the fact that with £1.30 per litre of fuel it's only really about 30pence that actually goes on the fuel itself. The rest is made up of taxes and VAT. Surely a better way would be to lobby the govmt to drop the fuel tax to reduce the cost..?

Yes I do deny it. I've been in markets for almost 30years and pretty much every "news report" (on subjects that I completely understand) is pure rubbish. Therefore, I'd give about as much credence to what journalists are saying as I do to the Beano.
Er. You seem to have confused me with an eco-warrior. I am not. I don't have a carbon footprint - more a carbon supertanker-print. My point was that when a billion Chinese and a billion Indians start really consuming as we do, the price of oil now will look like the bargain to end all bargains (ask yourself why China has been steadily buying up strategic commodity supplies). What we need is to ensure that everyone in the world pays the sort of taxes we do here in the UK. Also, the UK is less than 2% of global oil consumption. Petroleum distillates are a sub-set of that. If UK motorists drop our consumption by 10%, it is the square root of feck all. If I were a speculator in oil (I am not and never have been), I doubt a potential 0.2% drop in demand would scare me when China are building two power stations a week to keep up with the growth in demand for electricity there. |
