Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

My understanding is that Euro 5 and earlier diesel cars move up a band in the duty chart. My 2012 TDV8 seems already to be in the top band, so presumably no change. Only Range Rovers since 1988

What does "not meeting the latest standards" mean? I was under the impression that it was only diesels meeting the latest standard that could legitimately be sold! Confused

Huh?!!

PS: Looks like I can carry on running my smelly old 2017 V8 diesel into old age with impunity then! Laughing

Press comment suggests that cars must meet (a) Euro 6 and (b) the new 'real world' driving standards to avoid being taxed at the next higher band, and that it applies only to the first year registration duty. Q how the 3.0 and 4.4 diesels perform in 'real world' tests? A dealer once said to me that JLR had set Adblue use so that the cars would meet higher standards, but i have not seen any details about their performance in the 'real world' tests, so maybe JLR need to clarify this through a press release and/or through the dealers.

In the context of a MY 18 RR the extra duty is probably not that material - I think it might be £300 of a difference on a 4.4 SDV8. Only Range Rovers since 1988

The "Clean air fund" is just a load of old cobblers. If the Government were serious about cleaning air and reducing pollution they would put all bus stops back in layby's so you don't get 50 or 60 cars queuing behind the bus, all spewing fumes out. They would synchronise traffic lights to keep traffic flowing, instead of just the opposite. They would make roadworks use common sense and work 24hr then remove lights / cones as soon as completed. The list goes on and on as they're more concerned about fleecing the motorist with the excuse of trying to get everyone on to public transport (which is an impossibility for the majority of folk, and who in their right mind wants to stand in a smelly bus full of doleys)

Busses in our neck of the woods don’t tend to be full of doleys, they’re mostly empty save one or two old dears (like my mum) who aren’t even paying for the journey!

I think you'll find that's the norm for most busses, my pals wife was telling me that it was cheaper to get a taxi to the town centre with just one of her daughters (half price!) than it was to get the bus which included 2 x half mile walks and standing about waiting.... with costs that high verses door to door service.. the Taxi sort of wins hands down Rolling Eyes Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

The key thing... if you've already got a diesel car, you won't pay more.

That's hardly a surprise, bearing in mind people were encouraged to buy diesels some years ago. The government wasn't about to slap a big tax on drivers who parted with lots of money in good faith.

From April though, if you are buying a new diesel, you will probably pay more road tax in the first year. It depends on the emissions test that it had to pass, so I'd ask the dealer before you buy.

The new tax rise will apply until around 2021, by which time all new cars have to meet the tighter pollution rules. And this only applies to cars, not vans, trucks, etc.

So, it's more of a soft, brushing nudge rather than a big push to persuade people away from polluting diesels.

Of course, there is a danger that it convinces drivers to keep their old, dirtier diesels, rather than buy a new, cleaner one. 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus
