Sounds like a very good trip. Something I'd love to do.
In the UK the FFRR is towball rated for 150KG. Is it different in Oz? |

Excellent point. LR recommend a downward force of 250Kg in Oz on the ball assuming you haven't loaded up the luggage compartment (ours was empty and yes, I accept we had two wheels on the roof - none in the spare wheel well and two kids.)

Fantastic write up Chris and great to hear that you had a faultless trip. Your rig is superb, and possibly the best combo in Oz. a FFRR and Bushtracker is something to envy. I've been following your reports on Aulro, and have thoroughly enjoyed the read and the pics.

From the 2004 Owners Manual - [quote] Approximate curb weights V8 - All vehicles 2440 - 2570 kg (5379 - 5666 lb) Approximate curb weights Diesel - All vehicles 2435 - 2570 kg (5367 - 5666 lb) Maximum gross vehicle weight - All vehicles 3050 kg (6724 lb) Maximum front axle load - All vehicles 1530 kg (3373 lb) Maximum rear axle load - All vehicles 1850 kg (4078 lb) Maximum rear axle load when towing - All vehicles 2050 kg (4078 lb), at max speed = 100kph (60mph) Note - front and rear loads are non inclusive, 1530 + 1850 = 3380 which is greater than max 3050kg Maximum tow hitch load (tongue weight) - If the vehicle is loaded to the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), the tongue weight is limited to 150 kg (330 lb). If a greater tongue weight is necessary (up to 250 kg (550 lb) maximum), vehicle loading should be adjusted to ensure the GVW and rear axle towing weights are not exceeded. [end quote] So now you can do the sums. The factory fitted Westfalia tow hitch is rated for 350kg tongue weight and 3500kg trailer weight, but Land Rover says no tongue weight above 250kg allowed while still towing up to 3500kg. What to do about these contrary numbers? Easy; lots of Oz setups fudge around the 250kg tongue weight; we just use a weight distribution hitch to transfer 100-125kg to the front axle and allow the auto leveling suspension to adjust all the heights. This (probably) breaks the law because the unhitched trailer coupling down load is greater than the stated 'tow hitch load' but the actual rear axle load (and tow bar down load) when hitched will be reduced by ~100kg to less than the 250kg required by Land Rover. If the highway police write you a ticket for exceeding the coupling down load (unhitched) you could challenge this in court with actual weigh bridge measurements of the rear axle loads with and without the trailer coupled (with the weight distribution hitch on). As the Oz police don't write tickets for properly balanced rigs with weight distribution hitches I suspect they have already been told about this. bye. 2003 TD6, EGR delete, vortex crankcase breather update, performance chip, UHF 2 way, Android head unit, crash camera on dash, always-on rear view camera to mirror screen, LED DRL`s, Electric trailer brake controller.
