My half drive shaft (left hand side when sitting in car) finally gave up the ghost. I have a replacement but am having trouble getting the side that is in the diff out.

The half shaft broke diff side so I still have the gaitor and housing plus a shaft still in the diff.
The hub side came away with the hub spline, gaitor/cv, and outer shaft as one unit leaving the rest in the diff (if that makes sense).

the sline that goes into the diff has a recessed split washer which is what is locking it into place (I presume). I have scoured the internet to find a "how to" video but cant find one. anyone know how to get the half shaft out of the diff? There is a small amount of movement but that's it and I cant see anywhere for access to push the recessed split washer in.

Also does anyone know if the recall is still active for these old models (2002) as it has the original drive shaft that was a recall for a revised unit.

front or rear diff ?

You don't directly press in the clip in any way really when removing a half shaft. When enough outwards force is placed on the clip, it'll compress and pop out of its recess ... allowing the shaft to move outwards. You just have to provide enough force to do that.

Essentially, even the official splitting tool basically just drives a wedge between the shaft and the diff pushing the two apart.

I split my front drivers side halfshaft from the diff casing a few weeks ago with the use of couple of decent sized flat head screwdrivers driven into the gap. I didn't drive the screwdriver tips in a direction towards the centre of the shaft, but along the outer circumferences of the gap if that makes sense. Tapped both in a little at a time so that force was even across both sides. With enough pressure, the clip popped.

It pinged out the clip fairly easily to be honest. It did slightly bend a little bit of the metal work right at the outer edge, but nothing to worry about.

After that, I just tapped it outwards till it cleared. V8 or else ...

I had the recall done on my TD6 at the start of 2012 and it was reported they stopped doing the recall work for free just after, if I remember right.

Mine failed in 2012 - it was still drivable and making noises so I had my local dealer collect the vehicle. It failed whilst they were driving it so they picked up the tab for recovery to their garage . It cost me just short of £1k and Land Rover wouldn't entertain picking up the cost or discounting the work - they said the cut-off point was two weeks earlier ! A known fault which strands the vehicle so why it was never a factory recall with DVLA notifiying owners I will never know !

Sorted it yesterday, just needed a bit of wangling to get it out. Used a similar screwdriver technique as you fisha.

Also a bit awkward to get enough forward pressure with the ARB in the way to fit the new one, but a quick forward push seemed to do the trick.

Back on the road now and driving lovely again. Without the "give" I was getting when turning right.
Annoyingly it had been in twice to a local land rover specialist who didn't spot the give in the drive shaft even though it was very obvious when driving. Had they spotted it and replaced it I wouldn't of been stranded blocking a roundabout which the staturday rush hour traffic was very grateful for.
At least I know now what to look out for if the other side starts going.
