United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Causeway Grey
Rear judder when pulling away

Hi
I am 6 months into ownership of my 2013, now 50k mile 4.4 L405 and do love it. However there is an occasional, (which has now become regular) rear judder when pulling away from standstill, only when turning, it feels like the rear diff may be locking.
Sometimes on the dashboard an image of the drivetrain/axles/wheels showing the front wheels turned appears briefly (not sure what this is meant to signify).
Has anybody ever come across this problem before?
Also and im not sure if related or not, but from first start in the morning if I try and drive away immediately rather than waiting 20 seconds or so, it feels like the gearbox is almost slipping and revs raise without moving much. My driveway has a steep slope so dont know if this is normal as my BMW used to do similar.
Thanks.

Neil.

How are your tyre tread depths front and rear?
Has one worn more than the other?

I had this on my old ML when the fronts or rears were 3mm or so lower than the other axle.

Also had it on my wife's X3 when the inside edges were wearing more on the front, new tyres sorted it.

Loads of users getting judder when pulling away while turning the wheels with the new Merc CLE as well, they have had to use different tread pattern tyres for the UK (or rather RHD) markets.

All my Mercs have done that with the gear change from cold.

I have the exact same problem on my 2014 ATB with 60K miles on. Pulling away from standstill with steering wheel turned, results on the rear wheels skipping or shuddering.

Its on the standard 22 inch conti tyres, wear appears pretty even. Its outside warranty, so praying its not the transfer box. I have read on other threads it chould be Transfer Case Fluid or even Suspension Bushes at control arms.

There must be others who have the same fault?

My 2013 SDV8 AB has developed a similar issue. Just been to the dealers for a test drive with a technician and he reckons that there’s a technical bulletin for it. It’s now booked in to be fixed. Not sure what this entails as yet but he did mention contaminated fluids as a possible cause. 2019 L405 SDV8 Autobiography

Got mine booked in with a specialist on Tuesday, they charge £60 for diagnosing the fault. He thought over the phone it could be the anti roll bar bushes, which will cost me £280 to replace with genuine parts.

Please keep me updated with your progress and I will keep you updated with my progress.

I may also call my local dealership in the mean time to enquire about the technical bulletin.

Dropped off the car yesterday with the specialists and they experienced the fault, during their test drive. They called me last yesterday to advise that it could be the transfer box or the rear diff. They say its a common fault.

I am not waiting by the phone for the bad news!

My car is not yet 4 years old and has 63K on the clock, I think its very poor that such an expensive part should fail so soon.

I bought this car from a 67 Year old guy who had owned from new! The car has never been driven hard. Really upset!

An MY13 here needed a double flush of the TC oil then a TC calibration.

Same issue here, I initially thought the rears tyres were slipping on loose gravel, but that’s not the case.

I will get it checked out and post the response from the dealer.

Any squabble and I’ll be looking at the new X5! Current MY2020

Mine is in at the moment and they've confirmed that it will require a double flush of the TC oil then a TC calibration. It's a known issue and recorded in a TB. 2019 L405 SDV8 Autobiography

Latest update.

Car went to an independent LL garage who carried out the following:-

New front seal on the transfer box
New front flange kit
New oil

and heh presto, so far so good, the fault has disappeared! Very Happy
£586 total, covered by extended warranty.

Hope this helps.

Update to my previous post.

I’ve now collected my car from the dealers after they completed a double flush and software update of the TC. This is covered under a technical bulletin. Problem has now gone away🙂 2019 L405 SDV8 Autobiography
