Tired Tyres

I've done a search, but still, as usual, confused.

My 2004 TD6 came with 4 255/50/R19 107V Extra Load tyres on what I was told were RR Sport wheels. In the boot is a spare tyre, but no spare wheel inside it.
The 2 front tyres are worn and I need to get the tracking looked at fairly urgently.

Ideally, I would prefer 18" wheels and bigger tyres, but checking prices appears to reveal a slightly higher price for 18" rather than 19" tyres.

I plan a trip round breakers to look for either a set of 18" wheels or just one 19" wheel. Then I need to find the cheapest sensible economy tyres to be put on before the current ones go pop.

So the questions are : Do OEM L322 wheels have any identifying marks I can look for eg codes on the inside? Same for the possible RR Sport wheels. I've read about and will check the studs.

Do I need to ask any questions re tracking equipment? (I'm nervous about this because the local main dealer for my previous Jeep told me they couldn't do the tracking on 4WD vehicles, only 2WD).

Any recommendations for really cheap replacement tyres from the likes of ATS etc? I am very poor and want to save for the inevitable major FFRR costs in future.

Oh, and on full lock in either direction there's a tiny bit of vibration as if a tyre was rubbing, but I cant see any sign of this.

We look after old people and so have to do a lot of bumping up onto kerbs. Also mainly local shortish trips, including through the Mk1 Mersey Tunnel which was quite exiting when we had the cross-plied 110 and to a lesser extent the Jeep. There will also be occasional long trips to the boat and maybe heavy towing round fields when we get there, so just bog-standard general purpose tyres, I suppose. Local roads, of course, make "Forty Miles of Bad Road" sound like a serious underestimate. Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????

I can't help with most of the questions you ask.

But as a suggestion, you might be better buying good quality part worn tyres for the same/similar price as a new set of economy tyres which might not give the grip and safety performance you'd get from a "decent" tyre.

I agree, you have no idea of the history of a part worn. I'd stay well clear Exclamation

In my experience, budget tyres can be a false economy. Providing you're going to keep the FFRR for some time then a set of decent tyres will probably last twice as long as budget ones and will perform much better in all conditions. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Fair enough Mike, neither would I .

But then I'd not entertain an economy tyre either so thought with the OP saying he was a bit short of readies, part worn might be better than chinese Censored tyre.

So I agree with you, but was trying to provide an alternative Thumbs Up

When you buy a used car it comes with part worn tyres does it not?
Sellers of part worn should check for defects, I say should, and with that in mind I would not touch them.
However if you are going to bump over kerb you could damage a new tyre on day one.

Tracking needs to be done on a four wheel alignment system that can adjust all four wheels.

+1 for part worn tyres.

Personally I avoid any with repairs as some sellers are really pushing the limits or illegally stating incorrect repair information (such as repairs to the shoulders of the tyres which are not allowed).

Bought 4 Pirelli Verdes for about £40-50 each including delivery. Minimum 6-7mm tread and no problems a year on. Tom

Well, I do bump over kerbs as gently and at as close to a right angle as possible and just hope for the best.

I have usually, on 'normal' cars and on the old Disco, just bought the cheapest tyres from one of the national chains. I only remember once getting tyres that wore out quickly, otherwise they were all fine. The two rear tyres that came on the FFRR are Hifly, which doesn't sound like a posh make, and they have plenty of tread and look OK. I have to say that I don't fancy part worn tyres.

If you're planning on fitting 18" and bigger tyres I've just fitted a set purely because I had a full set of tyres from another vehicle.

Thanks,Hamlet, for the forum pointers.

I've now located a set of 5 18" wheels and tyres in a local scrappie. On a superficial look, they seem OK and look like genuine FFRR wheels, with the right pcd. I've checked with the nearest ATS that they do 4 wheel tracking and that they will check the wheels and tyres before fitting them.

I plan to return to the scrappie on Monday and try to buy on a sale or return basis in case they fail the inspection or if we find there is something odd with the offset or bead profile compared with the standard.

I still need to check the lugs and it would still be useful to know if there is anything specific such as a marking that identifies the wheels as being the right type. I believe they should be 7.5J x 18 and should this be marked somewhere?

The other thing that worries me is that on several of my cars in the past, slow loss of air in the tyres (and in one case cylinder head problems) has been blamed on "porous aluminium alloy". I presume there is no way of testing for this. Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????

Well, I've now taken a couple of wheel nuts (I've been calling them lugs) off and measured them.

Looking at the picture in Stan's post in the thread http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic1262-15.html

it looks fairly certain that they are pre-2005 and so should match the scrappie's 18" wheels, assuming the wheels are what we think they are.

The wheels on at the moment do appear to be later RR Sport wheels, and so the car appears to have been sold to me with the wrong nuts. Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????

I'm still making a meal of this and now preparing to inspect the wheels and tyres on offer.

I've just investigated the manufacturing date on the wheel-less tyre in the spare wheel well at the moment and after a lot of searching found 4 digits stamped rather than moulded into the tyre. These indicate that the tyre was made in 2008. The running, worn, tyres appear to be dated 2015.

So, is it normal that one would expect the manufacture date to be stamped, not moulded. onto the tyre, and, if the tyres on the replacement wheels look OK, would it be sensible to think of a cut off date of, say, over 10 years old to allow a few months of use while saving for replacements? Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????

All tyres have the week and year they were made stamped on them....



Tyres last around 5 years before they start to degrade. Porsche 911 (996)
2015 BMW 5 Series Touring
Not got a LR of any kind at the mo, and got itchy feet.

they are the wrong size ... The RR sport tyres are normally one ratio size smaller than the fullfatrr. For an r19 tyre, the normal tyre size would be 255/55/r19 ... not 255/50/r19.

Similarly the R18 size should be 255/60/r18.

As for cheap tyres ... I have previous had accelera tyres fitted to a passat and a freelander in years gone by. On camskill.com you can get a 255/60/r18 tyre for £65 ... I would much rather have that newer tyre than an old used higher premium tyre. You can even get a Cooper tyre for £70.

Does a £65 accelera tyre have the performance of a £150 pirelli ? . . . no. Is the pirelli double the performance, double the grip, double the wear cause its double the price? absolutely not.

Whilst you'll always get the comments of its an RR, ir should have a high level branded tyres on it ... the reality is that under normal, sensible average driving, a tyre such as the accelera will do the job fine. Where it will not show the performance of smething like a pirelli is under harder driving in the wet. You'll reach the limit of grip a little bit earlier with the cheaper tyre ... but you generally need to be pressing on quickly through a sharp corner it to get to those limits. With the wrinklies you say you'll have in the car I expect thats unlikely. I had Accelera Iota's on my 20" alloys on my freelander for a while. They did fine, but in the wet, you could feel them start to slide a littleif you really flung it round a roundabout. It really wasn't a case of 'slightest corner you'll be into the ditch' which I've read on other forums.

At the cheap end, I'd personally chose accelera as a make. They've done me well in the past.
At the next level up, I'd choose Kumho. I've always been happy with kumho tyres I've bought.
At main brand level, I personally cant see past pirelli.

Never rated dunlops.
Had bad experiences with continental. V8 or else ...
