How many miles should I get out of brake pads?

Just curious really, how many miles should I get out of front and rear pads with normal driving?

How do you define "normal" in your driving environment? Do you do a lot of urban stop/start driving, or lots of motorway mile-munching?
Clearly the former will result in much more brake wear than the latter.
