Looks like your 40 year old classic no longer needs an MOT...

In Ireland it's a 30 year rolling to qualify for classic tax, €56 per year and only cars registered after 1980 have to be tested, everything before is exempt.

I am far from sure if this is a good move and has put a lot of cats amongst the pigeons.

As far as I am aware you could still take an exempt vehicle for an MOT and get a certificate regardless of the fact that it is an exempt vehicle if you did wish

I suppose the theory is that if you do have 40 year old car you are taking care of it anyway.

The above is quite a scary prospect. Something that has been off the road for a number of years but doesn't need an MOT could be a death trap and no one has to check it! Alex

I must admit, I've always been a bit confused my this in Ireland, that a car registered in 1980 would have to be tested, but an older car, and potentially more dangerous due to age, corrosion, poor maintenance, condition etc. didn't need to be tested.

That’s not quite right. A vehicle that is exempt from an mot by age can’t be bought out of a barn (for example) taxed (free historic tax) and insured, then placed on the road. It would have to go through an mot first. Once it has past an mot, further tests would be an option, but even though it would not need any further mot’s, it would still need to be maintained in a roadworthy condition. I think the authorities take the view that an mot exempt vehicle is usually looked after by enthusiasts, therefore is usually maintained to a reasonably high standard and would be expected to pass an mot at any time if it were submitted for one. Enthusiasts generally look after their valuable classics. There won’t be many undesirables purchasing a classic vehicle then running it on a shoestring budget. This is not something new. Commercial vehicles manufactured before 1960 have been exempt from a vehicle test for some years, so this is most likely an harmonisation of the rules for all classic vehicles. I’ve asked my minions to ignore those posters who don’t meet a minimum IQ threshold... Perhaps I have to add you back. You know your stuff. |

Why would a barn find have to go through an mot first? Is this a legal requirement? I don't know.
