Looking for my first FFRR mainly on auto trader found what looks on paper a bargain. It's a Range Rover 3.6 TD V8 Vogue 5dr 2007 on a 56 plate 120,000 miles 1 Former owner, FSH, Next MOT due 10/01/2018, is it worth a look the asking price sems low @ £7,690

If loads has been done and it costs you nothing over the next year or so it is a bargain, if it is problem after problem then it may bankrupt you.

Is it a private seller?

I prefer to buy privately, I always have far less issues with private buys.

I think most people who have issues dump them into WBAC, auctions, trade them in to get rid of them.
So unless the dealer is decent, well known and local (or part of a main dealer network) I don't bother. Porsche 911 (996)

Need to check what work has been done, MOT advisories etc.

If no work done, no bits replaced etc. then you have that all to come!  .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

as above there is no right answer to that. If the car has been fastidiously maintained and all the usual suspects have been dealt with then it could be a bargain. However if its just been pootled about in and nothing replaced or attended to then it could be a financial gamble.

You need to see if:

Alternator replaced
gearbox serviced
diff oils changed
any turbo trouble? done or imminent

what type of miles has it done, they don't like town driving. They are fine and can rack up good milages on original turbos if that milage is the type which lets the engine get up to temperature. do you research properly and you should be more knowledgeable when you go to look at them. There is a buyers guide in the WIKI at the top of the page, and loads of info on things which commonly go pop.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It's very difficult to answer.

You need to look closely at the general condition and what has been done. Low and high mileage L322s all have a potential to cost lots.

I bought mine with 230,000km so only done a little more. It was a bargain at the time 3 years ago but I knew I would be sooner ir later be costing something. Price and a service every 10,000km is what got me in as intervals here are 12,000 and in 2009 changed to 24,000km.

I've had no regrets when repairs became necessary as I knew they were on the cards from hours of reading on here.

Every repair is an investment in its future reliability. So far the bigs things I've replaced tranny/transfer, alternator, and front air springs/shocks. I've also given it induction cleaner treatments, disabled the EGRs and cleaned the MAFs, which I hope contributes to the turbos' life.

How many miles do you plan to do? How does cost of the "big ticket stuff that will probably have to be fixed in my care" list compare with depreciation on a car reasonably likely not to need expensive fixes in your care?

Best answer would be if its had all the likely suspects done by a good garage but the owner has just got fed up with spending money.

Second best answer if you plan plenty of the right sort of miles is actually one in good cosmetic and body condition whose owner is bailing out before any, or any more, big ticket items. Hopefully with a worrisome noise you can use to negotiate the price down. Then take a sensible look at the "its going to have to be fixed sometime list" and just do your take on "the lot" in one hit. Expensive yes, probably £5,000 plus, but if you are aiming to put 80,000 to 100,000 on the beast and the price is right the financial maths could well work out.

On the other hand if you only plan 20,000 to 30,000 miles they could be very expensive ones!

On this forum, similar, well sorted examples are going for similar money. So it's not unusually cheap. Prices do seem to have dropped in the 18 months since I paid £9750 for 07 plate similar example, similar mileage. Maybe it's the diesel hate that has ramped up recently?

It's very true about the recent diesel bad press.
In the ford showroom last week, the salesman said, I can't get enough petrol engine cars, because of the government's bad press, everyone wants petrol, they don't understand the later engines are ok, crazy!

Thanks for all your thoughts seems like a FF rangie isn't the car for me only do about 7000 mls a year mostly towing a tin tent. So the search will continue would like to stick to green ovals though just hate the look of D3/4s.

I was going to say, you could have mine for that, and that drives a treat.

Only thing I would do if I kept it would be map the EGRs out for £235.

Alternator was done, new battery was put in, parasitic drains found and removed, new tensioner, belt and waterpump all fitted in the last 12 months and drives great.

I have freshened up the interior, put on some L405 wheels with decent tyres, brakes have loads of life left in them.

Drove round for two days and 400 miles with a Snap On diagnostic machine plugged in and everything was reading perfectly.
I had all the suspension gone over as I thought that may have been causing the drain, turns it was a dodgy bluetooth module, and the suspension was said to look in great shape.

The only niggle I have on mine is slight rear diff noise at 40mph you can hear with the radio off, I didn't actually notice it, but dropped the oil and no metal in there, and had a quote of £250 for a rear diff off a 67k mile car from a breaker and quoted 2 hours to replace.

Now I am not trying to sell it as I have 3 people already wanting to come and view it when we can sort of times etc. But just saying I wouldn't write one off.

Now of course you could drive down the road and a sensor go or get a flat tyre or some smash into the side of you like in any car. But I think there are ones out there that have had the niggles sorted so don't write them off. Porsche 911 (996)
