Having same problem with mine, currently in having a new oil cooler, radiator and gearbox xy position switch fitted, then hopefully not a gearbox fault! |

There have been five different transmissions fitted to the L322 and each has its own quirks and issues. To assist those wanting to help, please identify which year/engine you have.

Please do a thorough search on here before using the IID tool to reset gearbox learned values - the gearbox adapts to wear over time, resetting the adaptive learning can cause serious issues

With the 5-speed L322’s whenever a TRANSMISSION FAILSAFE warning appears you should first check the battery/charging condition – as Gold Ranger stated above (ensure you’re getting 13.5V to 14V across the battery terminals at tickover) and then check that the transfer box will select low range and then re-select high (to test the function of the shift motor potentiometer). Only if the vehicle passes these two tests should you then consider that the transmission may be at fault.

Been helping a mate out at his garage with customer who has had same problem. Just turned up with wrong gearbox filter but correct oil and seal. Ten year old FFR with original oil cooler. Better get new pipes we said, they will be difficult to get off the cooler we said, the plastic clips become brittle with all that heat and the rubber seals inside perish we said, don't take the risk of them coming off we said. Nope, he didnt want to. Got it all back together on Monday and sent him on his way. Tues night... one of the pipes come off the cooler and spewed all the transmission fluid . So today, new pipes fitted, yet more fluid over me and the floor but gears now fine. Boy though, was that fluid black when we first changed it and I wasnt impressed with the amount of stuff stuck to the transmission cover magnets.. This vehicle is on its 3rd box at 120K !! |
