The temperature sensors are supposed to protect the cluster in the event of a fan failure. The cooling fan is physically separate from the cluster , so your cluster might be ok, just the fan faulty. That is a very good question and I am struggling to find out whether a new screen will need coding at all.

Just to close this out, I ended up buying a brand new cluster (from eBay of all places) for £250 and had it fitted and coded by a local specialist for 2 hours labour - this has now been in for 6 months and working perfectly.
