I think its a bit more sinister than just blown speakers pal , does the stereo send it signal to the amp which then powers the speakers or is it split between the head unit and the amp ?

Have a quick look in the wiki, there is a section for the L322 electrical diagrams and it shows just what you are after.

The head unit signals the amp, the amp powers the speakers but have a look just to confirm....
