Right. Let's say I spend £3k on the engine, maybe even have the gearbox rebuilt in the next year or so. Spend = £15k, but have a car with good as new gearbox and engine. Spend an extra £2k on front facelift (already has rear leds), £1k on rear screens and reversing camera, total £18k.

Comparison with facelift? What are the advantages of a facelift version compared to above? But even a low mileage facelift won't have lpg, or a rebuilt engine and gearbox, and will actually look older compared to above?

The problem is that even after spending money on a new engine and gearbox, the rest of the cars components have done the mileage and are the age of the vehicle, so before long you will be replacing other things like bushes, bearings, suspension parts, etc , etc.... If you ask me, I'd sooner get shot of it and replace it with an example that has been loved and treated well from day 1. Save your money and put it towards another car together with the proceeds of this car.

Thats just my opinion though, no hard feelings intended to anyone....

True, but is there really much difference between on 02 and an 06 in that respect? Bushes, airbags etc?

Anyway, I'm going to see what possibilities are open. It's up on Pistonheads now, so if I get an offer I'll consider it, if I don't get offered anything sensible I'll probably keep it and replace the engine. Let the market decide for me!

Good question and one to which I wish I could provide a good answer. However I don't really know, basically it's noisy, sounds like a combination of vanos problems and hydraulic lifters. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

i thought the bmw v8 was a solid engine, sure its not your lpg system, can you bypass it to test? 2004 black Vogue TD6

have you had it checked by anyone in the know to determine if it is as you say or is it just guess work because it sounds rough ? as engines can sound truly shockingly worse than they are through various faults that occur onto no6 Range Rover

Made progress today. Firstly, I've found a chap called Stuart Ambrose, who's a Land Rover enthusiast, who's also a mechanic, who's turned his hobby into a business. He rebuilds and fixes many V8's, and operates a mobile service as well as having his own workshop. He's going to come and give the car a good going over, compression test, leakdown test etc etc. And have a damn good listen with his stethoscope.

This should give me a much better idea what I'm dealing with.

In addition I've possibly found a 'spare engine' at a very very good price. I'll probably buy it anyway.

So looking like I'm probably going to keep the car, and get it running as it should be one way or the other. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!
