White smoke

Hello All,

Started the TD6 this morning, and had HUGE quantities of white smoke.

There was no smell, just clouds of white smoke/steam.

I had the turbo replaced a few weeks ago, and since then I had noticed that there was sometimes a turbo squeal between 2000rpm and 2500rpm.

Am I wrong in thinking that is this smoke was due to turbo failure, that there would be a smell of burned oil?

If I am right... it then points to head gasket (I have not yet tested coolant), but is this common with the TD6?

I know that the engine has not overheated. I was driving it myself yesterday, and the coolant temperature didn't go above 11:30 on the gauge.

Any thoughts?

White smoke can also be unburnt diesel. You can check for the head gasket
But if your coolant has not dropped at all then probably diesel maybe a glow plug
Gone faulty.

Hope u sort it

Steve

Thanks for the response. That reassures me slightly because I hope that it isn't the HG.

Small (maybe silly) question... yesterday I was looking through the "Service/test" functions of the IID Tool, and I stupidly ran the "clear adaption values" option. I pressed the wrong button on the steering wheel.

Could this be what is causing the engine to smoke now?

Hi

No, clear adaptations just resets what the computer has learned
About that item. Gearbox etc will learn your driving style and
Allow for wear etc

No... I didn't mean the gearbox reset. It was under the Engine menu not the transmission menu

The gearbox was just an example, I can't see if you reset the engine adaptations it would cause your car to smoke. I may be wrong but it will only reset what it has learnt about your driving style.

I have just got home and have been checking "Blue".

Her water level was a TINY bit low, but nothing that I am worried about.

I started the engine and she was smoking away. NO BUBBLES IN WATER!!

Smoke then went away, so I took her for a drive.

Drove to next village and got out. She was smoking badly, and the smoke STANK of burnt oil.

Since I had the turbo replaced a few weeks ago, I think that there is a very good likely hood that the turbo has failed. That would explain the smoke.

I will get a new turbo (under guarantee) and have it installed. They we will see if she stops smoking!! (I have already told her that of she continues to smoke, she will kill herself)

When we got our Td6 it had just had the turbo replaced and made a funny owl hooting sort of noise at about 2000 rpm, I found that the oil pressure was low so the turbo was being starved of oils and was knackared within 2 weeks, I had the receipts and guarantees but knew it would be unlikely that I would get a successful warranty claim due to oil starvation so I bought the parts pre balanced and rebuilt it myself which isn't something I had done before and found it very simple, I also found that my parts were exactly the same brand (melett) as the reconditioned unit fitted by a specialist,
It cost around £150 iirc and hasn't missed a beat in about 18k since and no more hooting,
If your tempted I will try and find the details of the company I used for the bits, also it maybe worth checking your oil pressure with a gauge as it maybe what killed your original turbo too.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Thanks for the offer!!

I have actually been in touch with the garage that did the repair (I don't trust myself to work on the L322 yet... it is very complicated compared to the D2 that I normally drive). They fitted it, and tested, so there shouldn't have been an oil starvation problem. (Why did your one have a oil starvation problem?)
Next weekend they are going to take the turbo out, check what has gone wrong, supply and new turbo, and then I will send this one back for a refund.

This way, I don't have to deal with the HORRIBLE customer service of he place that I got my turbo from.

I never got to the bottom of the oil starvation issue although I suspected that the oil pickup was partially blocked with debris from previous turbo and head repairs usually from sealant etc, I decided due to the amount of work involved to removed the sump because of the front diff that I would just remove the engine and I was lucky enough that I had kept a great engine from a car I broke years ago and I put the removed engine straight on the stand with the intention to whip the sump off and check out my theory as only 5 mins work but 18 months on it's still on that stand Laughing

For the garage to be so pro active it makes me wonder if they for some reason suspect the part or the workmanship either that or they are just very honourable as most would take it apart first before agreeing to replace anything especially as the company that supplied the turbo to them will likely want paying for the replacement as I find they rarely honour warranty claims.
good luck with it Thumbs Up
Sorry I just see the bit about you sending the turbo back to the supplier after, I would send it to a firm to be tested first about £30 iirc and get a report as once your supplier has it if they refuse your claim you will have no way to test it afterwards.

I had a reconditioned turbo fitted to our Td6 earlier in the year. As soon as the garage fitted it and started the car up, it smoked badly and after only a couple of miles the engine oil level had dropped almost to the minimum on the dip-stick. I called the company who had supplied the turbo and they told me that it couldn't possibly be faulty, as all their turbos were thoroughly tested. They immediately tried to blame the garage. Reluctantly they agreed to take it back and then they supplied another under warranty, so I guess it was faulty after all!

When my BMW 5 Series needed a turbo a couple of weeks ago, I used another company.

replacing a turbo on any car isn't usualy a case of just swapping old for new , on many , a new oil pick up pipe is required aswell as an oil service then draining of the intercooler and its pipework , my point is its a lot more in depth than it appears and if done incorrectly will result in premature failure of the new unit , so if your unit fails again it is most definitely claimable under warranty as it should fail if fitted correctly

Just a small update on this issue.

Garage have installed a new turbo, and everything seems to be fine now. The squeal was the timing belt. Belt has been replaced, but VERY slight sound still there. Will be replacing the pulleys and tensioner soon.

I sent the defective turbo back, and you will never guess what the refurbisher said!!

The turbo is damaged due to oil starvation. Surprise surprise. They want €250 to send me a "new" refurbished one.

They have offered to send me photos of "my" damaged turbo.

What a load of CR@P!!

I will have to accept a 50% refund (they are going to consider if they can do that), and then simply make sure that I NEVER use them again.

So... if anyone needs a new turbo, PLEASE don't go to www.turboservice24.de or www.turboservice24.co.uk because they simply cannot be trusted. Their turbo failed after 3000km, and they simply say that it was caused by oil starvation and so not covered by warranty.
