looking to buy an L322 , ive seen one with a gearbox fault where it wont go into 4th , sale ad says but will go as far as 3rd via tip tronic , I am a mechanic with a history of repairing 4x4's mainly Nissan Navaras , so I'm not concerned about doing repairs myself , So shall I risk this L322 and hope I can sort the box issue OR find one without problems ? ive spent a few hours reading about gearbox issues but not found anthing with this specific issue ?

Is this 4.4 V8 L322 a 5-speed with the BMW engine or a 6-speed with the Jaguar engine?

Hi phil , going off your chart its a 53 so must be a ZF 5 speed

The 5HP24 is very straight-forward to repair. I must admit, though, that I haven’t seen that particular issue before. 4th gear uses both the A & B clutches. The A clutch is also used in 1st, 2nd & 3rd so it’s unlikely to be that. Sounds therefore like there may be an issue with the B clutch? Very unusual, though. This is the repair manual for the transmission if you want to have a look through it :

I suppose one of the dynamic seals on the stator shaft (ZF p/n 0734 401 248) may have failed but, like I said, that’s very unusual. Strange.

Thanks for the info so far phil , ive just looked at the add again , it says it wont go into 4th gear , dont know if that helps at all but yiu seem to suggest if i can get it at a good price it will be worth a gamble ?

Oh i meant to add the car has done 110k miles

If you look at the typical parts required for a 5HP24 rebuild i.e. overhaul kit, re-manufactured torque converter, b-hub/c-drum bearing, rear casing seal, output shaft O-ring, 3 steel pipes, A-clutch circlip, 11 litres of fluid & a filter - you’re looking at a minimum of £750 for parts. Would it make sense to spend this amount, taking into account the purchase price of the vehicle?

I think there lies the issue , buy it and repair whats needed to make it road worthy or buy it and refurb the box completely ( taking it off is a 'mayaswell' cenario ) the current owner must be aware of the cost to retail of a box refurb , hence the sale

It depends on how much of a bargain it is to start with I suppose. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If the car is cheap enough to buy and your not afraid to swap gearbox do that, second hand box can be had for £600 ish

And in case you need a reference point for a re-manufactured unit, I charge £1375 +VAT, including 11 litres of genuine LT71141 fluid and a re-manufactured (by JPAT) torque converter

well after all that . It got sold , will have to search again but out of interest is the td6 with a punt with a similar issue ( yes im aware the gearbox was made by kinder egg )

They're all “worth a punt” if the price is right and you're happy with the model.

Personally I like the TD6, transmission problems or not. I'm not one for new models, been there and done that years ago. I'm quite content with my TD6 and my D1 (and the 2A of course)
