My gearbox is not great and bangs into gear when stationary etc...

You have been thinking along the exact same lines as I have with regards to the MAF etc...

Will call LR today and see where we are with it.

Only other thing that has happened recently is running out of petrol and reduced engine performance on the dash because of no petrol before it cut out. However, LR have said no faults or unable to find anything wrong with the car. However, they can hear the noise and have heard it on the video I have sent to them.

This is beyond frustrating as I asked on Friday if they could open a technical case with LR, and here we are on Monday and they still haven't so I have asked again for this to be done.

I have tried contacting Powerhouse but there phones say they are closed.

Trouble is, I'm convinced it is something relatively simple that is the cause.

The running empty of the tank could have caused a problem although I'd expect fault codes related to that.

First it could have sucked crud from the bottom of the tank that clogged the filter (the fuel pump is installed in the tank and has a filter on it). This could restrict flow of petrol but I would expect fuel pressure to be low (fault code) and it doesn't explain the higher fuel consumption.

The other option (again should throw up some code) is air in the fuel injection system causing some injectors to now work well and some to work harder to get the car moving. Not typical for petrol cars but maybe.....

Water in the tank (built up over the years) into the fuel injection system causing issues but again should cause some fault...

I would have a look at the tank, open it up and see if it is clean and waterless. Maybe replace the filter while you are at it.

It is probably a long shot but hey, could be worth having a look.......... MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

It is certainly worth asking the question.

I wonder if there could be air in the fuel system and that is the noise I am hearing behind the glovebox?

Having a quick look on the internet,there have been a few reports of front diffs making the noise you describe.Diagnosis seems to be to drop the car into neutral at speed when it makes the noise,Not something I'd do personally,but if the noise persists then you know it's not engine related.

For the sake of half hour,i would whip the aux pump off to double check it is running the correct way,as it doesn't log any fault as in your situation.

I can't think of a mechanism that would cause it but that doesn't mean it can't have happened.......

Lets hope it is something that simple Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Also reports of alternator bearings and water pumps on the way out.

My money is on the aux pump being fitted wrong Thumbs Up

Ok, will suggest it to LR to have a look at.

Spoke to someone very helpful at powerhouse reference the issue and they were pretty certain it would not be anything to do with the supercharger - so rules that out to a point. However, if the car ever gets fixed then I will certainly be changing the oil in the supercharger as it has never been done before.

Could it be that the backfire damaged the catalytic converter on the passenger side when you ran out of fuel and that's causing the restricted performance and the noise?

Just a thought, as I have my fingers crossed that I haven't damaged mine, as I ran out of fuel for the first time with an indicated range of 40 miles, which threw up a restricted performance and engine warning light fault, stating Catalyst not operating adequately. I've had the fault cleared and am hoping that it doesn't reappear.

Possibly yes. I had a thought that the nearside cat had broken up and was partially blocked and air noise was exhaust gas coming back up the pipe again.

If LR come back with nothing then I will whip out a sensor and poke a camera down the exhaust. If the cat has broken up then that would answer it.

LR finally seem to have raised a tech case with regards to my car.

Be carefull taking the sensors out, the threads are easily damaged. Use plenty of lubrication or the stainless steel will "bite" badly !!! I had to rethread the exhaust hole on my SC 4.2. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

So LR still cannot get to the bottom of this presently. They have sent a technical case to Land Rover who have not come back with anything useful.

At present we are all stumped.

They road tested the car and could not get the noise to occur but did say how the fuel gauge was almost moving whilst the car was being driven and is using a lot of fuel.

How did you get on with your inspection of the cats?

My engine warning light reappeared & the fault came up as both cats, so they are being replaced on Friday.

My fuel consumption was also rising noticeably, but was told that this was due to the ecu going into default mode and overfuelling once the warning light reappeared.

I haven't checked them, yet.

Thinking about it, there could be an issue with one or more of the injectors. This would explain why the fuel is increasing and also the noise could be from one of the rear injectors near the bulkhead. When I worked at VW the T4 used to suffer with number 3 injector failure and with the copper washer fitted they used to chuff like a steam train at idle so wondering if the noise is caused by a leaking injector. This is why, at the moment, I am not going down the road of failed or a blocked cat. I also think if one was blocked and the other ok, then you would see that one was getting a lot hotter than the other when looking at them from underneath. If it was my cats, I would cut them out rather than replace them.

Still, it is somewhere to start and a sensible place to start as well without any fault codes.

Fingers crossed something comes of the injector leak-off test.
