Just wondering at what speed people 'cruise' at on the motorway ?

I usually sit about 80, keep up with the flow I find it's a comfortable speed and means I can use the motorway as you should i.e drive in the LEFT lane unless overtaking!!!

In the work van, usually more when i'm late  

I guess you can sit on 80 - but 70 is the limit...
You're not worried about cameras then?

Just curious. Would they bother you for so little over the limit if that's what the rest of the traffic was doing?

Mind you, we're stuck at 100kph, so even 70mph would be a luxury.

Generally speaking, motorway limits here are 110km/h. In this State, the HWP are a little (a little!) bit forgiving if you're not being an idiot - they'll accept about +10%. In the State of Victoria, things are different. The limit there is +2km/h. That means bloody Victorians, when they come here, annoy us by sitting below the speed limit.

Our fixed speed cameras are well sign-posted and have a +10% tolerance, too.

Try using Speedview app on your phone, or any other GPS based thing will do. You will find that your indicated 80 on the dash is more like 75 as a true speed. You will generally not be bothered up to 79 true speed, it's when the number on the camera starts with an 8 that interest picks up. I do this on the bike, indicated 70 is actually 64. I sit at indicated 85 and that gives a true speed of 77. Touch wood I still have a clean licence.

I set mine at 70mph, and have a relaxing drive.

Driving at 80mph and getting somewhere 10 minutes(ish) faster after an hours drive to me, and risking points on your licence is not worth it.

having driven for a fair number of years now i find the 'fast lane headlight flashers' have pretty well disappeared cos of the volume of traffic now on the motorways and also the risk of getting points for speeding ,,
70mph'ish is my comfort zone here in the UK.. ... - .- -.

I set my ACC at 73 mph which I have convinced myself is probably very close to 70 mph in real terms. Any views on this will be read (by me) with interest.

My Road Angel Gem shows the real speed measured by reference to satellites, and this can be compared with the speedo reading. On standard wheels/tyres an indicated 72mph was 70mph on the Gem. Every car will be different, but I expect you will not be too far off. With 405 style 20s and 255/55R20 tyres on my 322 it's about the same, maybe speedo slightly less than the speed shown by the Gem (1/2 mph at 70).

On unfamiliar motorways I run the Gem. When we travelled to S England last year I was struck by how many camera sites there are, many in m/way gantries so one can't see them as one approaches and of course average speed cameras are abundant. I find it is just too much hassle to be on and off the cruise control so set it at a genuine 70 (or whatever the limit is) and relax. Only Range Rovers since 1988

depending on where you are in the country they prosecute regardless of the old skool +10% allowance
on the M1 I have noticed there are gantry mounted speed cameras in the managed motorway section that are supplemented by HADECS, so they are likely monitoring spot speeds thru the gantry and averages via ANPR

Going up to Manchester the weekend to go shopping many flying past me at a lot more than 80 plus so can't be too many gantry cameras working imo and I guess I'll soon see in the next few weeks but haven't had any in two years running up there,in the good old days if you had a clear quiet run you could get back to cannock in 35 minutes from the centre before it became easy pickings for revenue and car increase 😐 _____________________________________________________

Don't get me wrong, I don't drive like some sort of maniac, or tear up behind people flashing my lights at them.

Also agree with Stan regarding too busy, luckily most times I use the motorway is in the work van, which 77mph on the Speedo shows as 70mph on my GPS (Ford Transit)

Maybe I haven't been caught because I don't usually use motorways, prefer the ones over in Belgium and Germany much easier and more relaxing to drive on, I find there are a lot less middle lane hoggers too  

Set cruise to speed limit on road and accl / deccl as and when needed, we dont have the enforcement here in the republic as the UK so speeding is a bit more the norm. On the bike i travel at a fair rate and never have an issue , mainly because we dont have traffic helicopters so not much point chasing a sports bike. 2015 4.4 AB
