Transmission Flush

Hi All

Long time lurker, had to star up and post due to a necessity Razz

My rig has coincidentally reached 100k and 10 years at the same time, time to spend the big bucks.

I'm after Geoff or Mike, do they still do them trans flushes?

Also changing all the oils, any advice on LR Dealer supplies compared to other brands elsewhere.

Shopping list seems to be:

Spark Plugs

Transmission filter and oil

engine filter and oil

brake fluid

coolant

transfer box fluid (also locking diff?)

axle diff fluids

and any or all sump/drain/fill plugs needed.

Priority is getting hold of Mike or Geoff but any advice would be most appreciated Thumbs Up Bmw E36 328i M Sport Cabriolet

Hi

Lots of views but no reponses Crying or Very sad

Further to the conversation I am now getting conflicting information in regards to the gearbox flush and could do with some professional advice or opinions.

Been told by transmission specialist garages that

1. Running the engine for a minute and extracting the oil through the oil cooler pipes is the same.

2. Putting any type of cleaning detergent through the gearbox is asking for trouble as remains of it will breakdown the new ATF oil.

3. There is no need to do a full clean flush as if there are any 'bits' inside the transmission it needs repairing anyway and a flush is not going to help. If no bits no flush necessary.... Neutral

Any views on the above would be most appreciated as I am now totally confused as to which direction to go Confused Bmw E36 328i M Sport Cabriolet

Think i'd rather flush and drain it properly via gravity than vacuum pump it out. And as for flushing, it seems to make sense to me. I flush the engine every time I change the oil, so I would do the same with the gearbox. Especially considering the cost of a new box or rebuild.... Whistle Tony

You've made a point there Big Boy, if the additives that flush the engine are not harmful to the engine oil then surely the same goes for the trans cleaner... Confused Bmw E36 328i M Sport Cabriolet

I'm led to believe the 'flush' is basically using double the amount of ATF needed. Drain. Fill. Drain. Refill. Plus filter of course. Depends on the gearbox type as to whether you can replace with the metal or plastic sump. Thumbs Up That's why it's expensive!! Tony

Yes that's the double flush, that is fine no problem. It's the so called mega flush which uses the Wynns or Fortron machines which the tranny garages have a problem with. (Oops that last bit came out wrong Whistle ) Rolling with laughter Bmw E36 328i M Sport Cabriolet

PMSL!!! That must be why the Tranny garages prefer to suck it rather than let it dribble out of the bottom Laughing Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Tony

Good write up in that thread Hamlet but that's what our 'boys' Laughing in the gearbox garage recommend however my question is probably more to the mega flush guys, is the machine way better than the DIY procedure Hamlet has just linked to?

Is there a benefit of one over the other? Bmw E36 328i M Sport Cabriolet

I think the simple answer is....if there is any doubt then don't do it. Stick to the recommended way.
I work in Safety. I usually say to people, if it doesn't look or feel right, then it isn't. So don't do it! Thumbs Up Tony

Service Bits

After spending countless hours doing research worked out what some of the original LR dealer service parts are and best place to get them which could be useful to many here:

Transfer box fluid IYK500010 is actually Castrol BOT26 and cheapest is Rimmerbros at £16

Locking diff fluid LR019727 is Castrol BOT720 but can't find that anywhere

Axle diff fluids TYK500010 is Castrol SAF-XO cheapest is OPIE at £15.95+VAT

Spark Plugs are NGK IFR5N10 cheapest eBay

Transmission Oil ZF Lifeguard 6 cheapest eBay Bmw E36 328i M Sport Cabriolet

If you speak to Chris at Opie he will look after you. I was talking to him about Lifeguard 6 and Castrol Syntrax for my L322 earlier today. Tell him Ken at Milestone Motorsport recommended him. They apparently will price match and £17.75 is the cheapest I found for Lifeguard 6.
