Thinking of getting an L405. I currently have a 2009 L322 3.6 TDV8 - will I notice much difference between the 3.0 and the 4.4 L405? It'll tow a tin tent for 5 or 6 times a year otherwise it's a daily driver.
I'm not interested in the bigger engine just for racing it though as Madam has a car for that. 17 MY Corris Grey 4.4 VAB

Between the 2 L405 models, yes.

Between the 3.0 and your 3.6, you should find that the 3.0 feels at least as fast powerful as that if not faster. It's lighter and almost as powerful. The 3.0 is by all accounts fairly equivalent in performance to the 4.4 tdv8 L322.

Compared to your 3.6 the 4.4 will feel significantly quicker.

Personally I would drive both, and not get too hung up on the engine size. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

This is always an interesting question to ask on this forum. Us 4.4's love our engines and them 3.0's love theirs. In conclusion I would say that both engines are good, one is a bit smoother and less power but probably enough power for a lot of people.


The 4.4 is better though!

SDV8 l405 pretty quick and loads of torque if a little unrefined compared against some other V8 diesels. V6 plenty quick enough in real life driving situations and gets away from the line extremely well even compared with its big brother but undoubtedly it's not ultimately as quick. Would it pull a tin tent? Well the best towing car out there is a D4 and that has the V6 in it so absolutely.

How do they compare against the old 3.6 and 4.4.? Well the V6 is as quick as the 4.4 and quicker than the 3.6 but once again the l405 V8 is quicker still and makes a good noise when you press the loud pedal. It's just that 405's, especially the way I drive them are best when wafting along, serenely and thats why I prefer the V6, having owned both. That said, it's a bit of a swings and roundabouts situation, so I'd certainly consider both the V8 and V6 in my next car, which ultimately will be bought on condition, mileage and spec.

V6 is a better driving car if you can ever call a FFRR that! Much lighter front end, feels more lively and goes very well giving 95% of a V8's performance. My V6 towed my 2.5t rib to Sardinia with no issues at all, only occasionally up a long hill did I feel I needed more power.

If I had the choice of two identical specc'd cars I'd choose the V8 over the V6 but they are very close.

i drove a few cars with the 4.4 and the 3.0 before buying mine.
i concluded that the 3 was ideally suited to the car. whenever i turn a corner, it gives me the feeling that it rolled a lot less than i thought it would. the 4.4 has the anti roll technology but i think it needs it because the front end is so much heavier. the 3 doesnt have it and i dont think it needs it. it has a really sweet front end and is very smooth.. the fuel economy has been surprisingly good too.
