Has anybody removed the standard phone connection kit from the upper cubby and replaced this with a simple tray for their mobile or ipod? If so, any pointers on where to get a tray from?

Ideally I'd like to add a USB port in here too to connect my iPod to both power and aux, has anyone managed to do this? (I have the rear Aux in and lighter socket so I reckon it shouldn't be too difficult?)

Yes - I've done this. There is and OEM tray insert available but it's very expensive - especially for something that will rarely be visible I made a simple insert from some stiff card and thin black neoprene sheet bought on fleabay. At the same time I bought a connector cable which I've simply plugged into the rear aux port and then run through the rear 'vents' below the panel that holds the aux port and 12v sockets and through to the cubby via a small hole drilled into the rear.
It's all quite neat and unobtrusive, and as you say means you can keep an iPod or phone in the cubby providing both sound and power. 2012 TDV8 Westminster in the New Forest

Well I knew it was too good to be true!

I bought that upper cubby tray from eBay and guess what, yep it was the wrong one 😠

Looking at the current arrangement, if I could just remove the handset cradle, then the rest of the upper tray would be perfect for what I have in mind. Has anybody managed to separate the phone cradle from the upper tray?

So its out (photos to follow). Quite easy really, undo the torx screws in the underside of the divider between the upper and lower cubby, unscrew the phone cradle and disconnect the wiring. I'm left with a hole between the upper and lower cubby where the phone release button was, but I'll tackle that in phase 2 when the Alpine goes in.
