Where did you guys get your shifter knobs?

How hard was it to replace?

If you buy your knob from , lets say the internet i.e., Ebay the knob will come with an allan key to remove holding fastener, which is just under the top cover. To remove the top cover you will need a very fine plastic lever tool or you will damage the top cover.
You can replace the whole knob in the down position, as it just lifts out, once you remove the centre fastener.
The knob is keyed so it will only fit one way.
Then just put the top cover back on. Warning, just use a tiny bit of the double sided tape to hold down the cover as you may want to remove it latter if you want to change again, if you use a lot of tape you will have a hard time getting the top cover off with out damaging it.

I'd be interested in finding an aluminium/knurled rotary shifter.

The internet doesn't seem to offer many options.

Hi again try Aliexpress.com Type in Range Rover Vogue in the search field and you will see the knurled knobs on their site I think they go for about $75.
They are a good site to deal with.
