TRANSFER BOX OIL LEAK

HI GUYS.

i have just had my car mot'd french style and although it passed, they have informed me there is a slight oil leak coming from the transfer box;

not pouring out but the odd drip which they think is coming from where the transfer box joins the gearbox so perhaps leaking at the gasket,

they have passed the car but say it needs to be done obviously;

if it is the gasket, can this be replaced without dropping the main gearbox, ie just taking the transfer box out, and replace the gasket ?? or is it a bigger job, than im thinking ?

im just trying to get an idea of the size of the job and what i would expect to pay if a dealer in uk were to do the job, so i have an idea before going to the garage

There are 5 places a trans box can leak, this does mostly apply to the latter cars, yours has the NV transfer box rather than the magna steyr one but:

1 mating face between the 2 halves of the shell
2 front input shaft seal
3 output shaft seal
4 solenoid
5 high low position sensor

You need to narrow it down, could be any of these and leaks can track easily round the gearbox

My disco leaked from the seal between the two mating faces
My last FF leaked from the position sensor and took ages to track down and I had the box halves resealed several times.

You don't need to take the main gearbox out to drop the transfer box Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

hi there
thanks for the info; im not in a position to do the job, but time wise, is it a straight forward job to drop the transfer box ? is it a job that would take a half day, or a day to remove:/ refit plus not inc the tracing of the leak?

also; i dont know how long it has been leaking, and how much fluid has been lost, so can this be checked/or topped up or id it a sealed unit ??

The transmission and transfer box are separate components with separate (different) fluids. There is no gasket between the two. The transmission output shaft and the transfer box input shaft each have a lip seal to prevent leakage. The mating face of the two casings has a weep hole cast into it so that any leakage from these seals is apparent.

Your GM 5L40-E transmission uses Dexron fluid which is coloured red. The NV225 transfer box fluid (Castrol BOT 26 FMB 1 75W-90) is fairly colourless so you should be able to determine which seal is leaking. The capacity of the transfer box is only 1 litre and it is fitted with a drain plug and a filler/level plug.

hi phil

thanks for the pictures and info;

well all i know is it is dripping around the joining face , so from what you are saying is if it is red it will be the gearbox seal and if clearish will be the transfer box !!

i have no idea at present, but will take a look,

how long a job would i expect to remove the transfer box ? a few hours or days !!? Rolling Eyes

just another point, if it is red fluid, denoting the gearbox seal, can this seal also be replaced with the transfer box out and leaving the gearbox in situ ??

hi guys

i have looked under and i would say the drips hanging on the under tubular frame is the colour of tranmission fluid; ie redish, so do i conclude from that that it is probably the gearbox shaft oil seal !! and if so can this be done with gearbox in place and just transfer box out <,,,,??

The book time for removing and replacing the transfer box (41.20.25/99) is 2.2 hours and the input shaft oil seal replacement (41.20.50/01) is an additional 0.1 hour.

Once the transfer box is out the transmission output shaft seal can be replaced with the transmission in-situ (44.20.18 ) because the casing has a rear extension housing which can be unbolted from the main casing to provide easy access.

hi phil

thanks for your in depth explanation and pictures etc; extreemly helpful in now understanding what to expect in time and costings etc

not as big a job as i had feared, but as i am just getting over a fuel injection problem which cost me a total of 2500e several weeks ago and 1100e last week with a crankshaft pulley replacement and associated bits here and there; i was panicking somewhat of another expensive repair; they say it comes in three's so hopefully this is the last for a while Rolling Eyes

thanks again for the help

and to everyone, thanks for all your input Bow down Bow down

that appears to be some level of forethought and planning by the Gbox designers there........ which is unusual Rolling with laughter There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
