Do these only work when you're using Navigation?

A few times now when i've just popped out in the car so thus not using SatNav, the system doesn't alert me to local speed cameras (good job i've known for years they're there). However if for some reason i'm returning from a longer journey & Navigation is still active i am alerted.

Just want to check what's normal as seems a crazy situation if correct, as why would you use Nav to pop to the local petrol station or shops? My wife's Volvo & previous cars i've owned with the feature don't require you to be navigating to get alerted of speed cameras. Paul

I'd need to test it, but think mine only work if the map is displayed - I don't need to have entered a destination though.

Also need to have the sound on - I used to use the nav muted, but for the cameras, I need to have the instructions audible.

i get an audible alarm for speed cameras all the time, doesnt matter if if navigation is on or off

Same here, I get an audible alert without the navigation screen on (normally have the in-apps screen on).
