2012MY has been superb.

Spent last couple of weeks claying it, detailing it and it is in better condition that when bought. Immaculate inside and out. 49k miles, new Pirelli tyres, wants for nothing. Been no trouble at all. A pleasure to have and being serviced by LR dealer this week. Really nice.

But... been seriously looking at A.U L405's for a wee while now ... why?!?

Head says L322 ... heart says get L405 whilst can still get good return on the L322.

L322 is in better nick than most of the L405's we have seen.

Traditional classy looking car that I know how to tinker with versus more slick looking modern barge that I know nowt about?

i sometimes pine for my old SC i had..it was reliable and nice looking but i was lucky enough to able to be in a financial position to jump to my current westie..

i also have looked at the L405 and to get a decent one i would have to spend around £20k and thats providing i get circa £27k-28k for mine ....thats a big amount of cash [for me] to upgrade and although i can afford it , i cant justify it....

if you can more than afford to do the upgrade Ryan then go for it but you might think that that money might have been better spent elsewhere.. ... - .- -.

Over here the price of a 4.4 tdv8 starts at about double that of a 3.6, and a L405 price is about double that of a L322 tdv8 4.4.

If I had the spare cash I'm sure I could justify to myself a L405 purchase. Alas I don't. But luckily I like what I have. ______________________________

Yep, I did the same. In the end it was SWMBO who convinced me to go for the L405 and for the record, THAT IS THE LAST TIME I LISTEN TO HER!!!!

Many more points to compare and in a lot of ways the L405 is the better vehicle. Right now I am having discussions with the dealer about finding me a very late L322 4.4 Autobiography. As soon as he finds one with all the toys I will be out of the L405 like a scolded cat. But that's me, and I ain't you bud. Each to their own.

There is no doubt the L405 is a lovely piece of equipment to have on your drive and under your ar5e when you are driving. But, the L322 is too.

Test-drive an L405 (one that you'd actually want to buy) and see what deal you could get and then make your mind up.

It might be tempting fate a little too much, but at least you'll know exactly how much it'll cost you to change and how much you may like / adore / dislike the L405 compared to your L322.

A newer model is always appealing, but where does this logic take you? In two years time you'll be wanting to change again, no doubt. My guess is the depreciation on yours is less in actual terms than that of an L405. You wait a while longer on yours and lose a few more £Thousand, but that opens up even more possibilities on a potentially even newer L405 for not much extra than you're looking at now. Si. <This is my name.

I'm in a similar position, albeit my car won't be as clean.

There is no right or wrong answer, you will know when the time is right to change, but my own thinking just now is:

1. An older 405 with similar mileage is not worth the extra cash, especially if you will retain essentially the same 4.4 engine. The 405 is less practical in some respects and while there are fewer corrosion worries, a good 322 is, I think, better than a poorer 405.

2. I would not buy another diesel until the Government's position on emissions etc is clear. The trend elsewhere in Europe is to restrict access to city centres and while I don't do much town driving, if a tough regime emerges it will affect the diesel market. 10% off the value of your car and 10% off the value of a 405 will reduce the cost to change.

3. LR will change its engine line-up when the deal with Ford ends next year. It might be worth waiting and seeing what comes out of that. A friend, who has a 3yo 405 4.4 (incidentally it has had no problems at all during those three years) declined to change now because he wants to see if they produce a decent petrol/electric hybrid (his wife has had a series of Lexus hybrids).

4. The market has been very strong for years, there are no end of stories on here about dealers who can't be bothered to provide a good service because life has been too easy. These trends reverse eventually (e.g. because there are reductions in motor finance as the Bank of England is worried it is out of hand, there is a glut of diesels following regulatory changes, economic downturn etc). Again this might reduce the cost to change as much of the depreciation has already been suffered on your car.

So while I might look at a 5.0SC if one came up with the right spec and price, I'm content to stick with what I have. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Fuel and running costs don't dominate too much. Instinct would for another 4.4 although people do seem to rate the 3.0 engine.

There are a lot of nice looking L405 that seem to be hanging around on franchised forecourts, more so the 4.4?

N1ck, we've always gone with the warranty for peace of mind but the thought of handing over £150/month for full LR warranty without even any breakdown cover is fuelling maths logic to conclude, 'might as well just change the car and get a free 2 year LR warranty with the replacement'

Whilst i voted twist (as life's short and I believe once you've started to think about changing it'll eat you away!), I would however caveat my vote with advising you to wait for the perfect one that ticks your options list requirements... otherwise you'll start your new purchase with a compromise already in your head!
