Hi all. Can someone tell me the best route from cornwall to Verl, East Westphalia germany? I am thinking of driving there instead of flying as i have never drove in europe before.
I wojld prefer to use the channel tunnnel.

Is it worth trusting the sat nav?

As i have never done this before. Is there anything i should know or do? My car insurance covers me abroad, is there tolls etc? Just want to be prepared.

i have a 2012 L322 and i've not had any problems with that nav ..with yours being newer you shouldnt have any problems..

there will be tolls, some recommend getting a 'tag' so that you cruise through the toll booths but i've never done that as i dont mind stopping for a few seconds.. ... - .- -.

I wouldn't. I would download the TomTom app on to your smartphone. It's free and you can download all the latest maps on your home wifi before you go so that you are not hammered with data charges abroad. You can download traffic within the app for a few quid which is worth doing, it does use mobile data but only a tiny amount compared with downloading maps on the fly.

Nationwide FlexPlus account (£10 per month) includes Euro breakdown cover, health insurance, mobile phone insurance etc. Worth looking at.

When you book the tunnel remember to book for a high vehicle that way there is far more room.

I have booked the tunnel so all ready to go. Booked the prebooked time one as didnt think £200 extra for the flex one was worth it, or is it?

No. On your way back even if you are early they will usually get you on the next train any way.

Normally we fly over to Hanover airport and get collected by car and i see where they have no speed limit and then 80km speed limits. So maybe i will see how the car feels at higher speeds!

I've done a similar trip many times, the roads are mostly pretty good (except round Antwerp, that's a pain in rush hour). The sudden sense of liberation you get when you enter Germany is wonderful! I usually buy the Flex ticket to come back because it can be hard to predict arrival times (and we travel with our dogs, which adds a tad more unpredictability). Flex is good if there are delays on the trains, they put you on the next one and you don't have to wait. Saved us a wait last time because they had problems. The people behind us on the train had waited nearly 5 hours. Definitely book for a high vehicle though, and go in through the right entrance because there's a barrier for lower vehicles and an RR won't fit under it!

The route suggested looks good to me. My sat nav has never let me down in Germany, although venturing off the main roads in Belgium can be an adventure. And it's usually a good idea to let your insurers know you're going abroad even if you have cover for abroad, they always appreciate the info.

One thing - on the return journey, I'd recommend turning towards the coast before leaving Belgium and avoiding Lille (the town in France, not the village in Belgium). Lille itself can be busy, and the motorway out was horrible last time we were there, like a farm track! But they may have repaired it by now I suppose, it was a while ago...

There are no tolls between Calais and the border with Belgium, but the tag is useful if you're planning on driving in France at any point.
