Inadvertently selected reverse going downhill - awful noise!

As it says.........was travelling down a short hill and to avoid engine braking I usually just drop it into neutral until i get to the bottom but today went too far and selected reverse Rolling Eyes

Awful juddering and loud noise and unhelpful message on dash display saying "Recommend using HDC". Stuck it back in drive and its been fine since.

So, any potential damage do you think or is the fattie sensible enough not to select reverse when its moving forward (albeit at 10mph) and the juddering etc was just to tell me to stop being such an a Censored e and select drive Shocked 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

My dad used to slip his auto into neutral for a coast down a hill. It eventually Censored the box. That was in the 70's. Maybe it's ok these days?

just thinking about that scenario the other week Rob and wondered if it was possible to put it into reverse whilst going forward and you have proved that it is ..

It's only a 200yd section at my kids school. I only do it there as when it gets to the bottom it seems to take a second or two for it to pick up if i leave it in drive. I'm not convinced that letting it engine brake with my foot off the gas is the best thing to do downhill either.

My guess is that, as the selector is only a switch and not a physical link, the gearbox control system wont select reverse if the forward speed is too high. I'm sure some clever auotbox person (like RRPhil) would be able to confirm that.

Putting the engine into neutral to coast seems like a bad idea to me.
If you did this on a driving test, I think it would be a fail? Not in proper control of the vehicle....

Having just come from an Audi with a similar knob for the computer I'm worried I'm going to select reverse while zooming out the sat Nav, have nearly done it a couple of times.

It's not coasting, it's a short steep hill. Yes, it probably isn't allowed in the driving test, but as for not in proper control, you control a vehicle down a steep incline with the steering and brakes not the accelerator. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

It is not a good idea to coast in neutral with an auto box.

Oil pressure in the box is maintained by the drive from the engine, not from the driven wheels over-running. This eventually causes issues with excessive wear in the box as it can be turning inside at road speeds without the necessary attendant oil pressure.

Usually OK for a manual box as they generally don't have an oil pump fitted, but rely on the gears being partially immersed in the oil

As above, use HDC if you must but if its moving stick it in Drive or Reverse depending on the direction of travel. We know about rebuilding the 6&5 Speed boxes on here but the 8speed ones..... that could be very very costly! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I think you've been VERY lucky. I "assumed" that the box selector wouldn't allow this change of gear (and potential direction) above a certain speed....if it can Shocked Shocked Shocked

Hopefully no damage....if it's working ok, it's likely fine. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I would hope to think you are ok.

We lost brakes on our Rhino Charge last year (more on that to follow) and had to drop the car into reverse to stop a couple of times from a very slow idle - ended up Censored the box and had to get a new one Sad

Would think that the more modern cars would be able to use their electrickery to prevent this happening though!
