Stop Engine Low Oil Pressure at start up from cold

I am new to this forum, in fact I've never posted in any forum before. I've recently bought an 03 plate 4.4 HSE in Bonatti Grey, with 116,000 on with LPG and partial service records and lots of receipts and past MOT's. It was on Ebay, I went to have a look, took a test drive and part ex'd my A Class and drove her home. The car has had an oil leak and I've just had the Rocker Cover Gaskets replaced this week. It's still early days and there's a bit to do to get her where i want her to be. I work nights and most weekends, in the Spring and Summer months I bike to work so haven't used her much. I check the oil regularly, and after the bank holiday it was booked in to have the gaskets done. I'd not started the Rangie for 3 days and planned to use her on Tuesday, before taking her to the garage. I checked the oil and started her up. Quite noisy from cold but settles down, however I got a flickering oil can and a bong STOP ENGINE LOW OIL PRESSURE. I stopped, restarted, idled for a while then set off. The oil can was still flickering and the warning was coming and going. I stopped at the garage as it's only around the corner. Carried on and the oil can/bong went away. I got the car back on Friday, gaskets replaced and all was well. Left it overnight came to it Saturday lunchtime and the flickering oil can and warning message has come back. Once warm it goes away but that involves a tense drive down the road. Took it to work last night and same thing but it was a bit quicker to sort itself out. The issue only arises from cold, and has only appeared this week. Once warm it goes away, and I can then use it all day with no problems. I intend to call the garage tomorrow, I'd hoped the oil leak fix would have sorted it but it seems I've a new problem to sort!

Not an expert, but I'd make sure the sensor wasn't faulty first.... easy fixes first and all that. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I intend to replace the sensor and have the filter checked. I've just been out to have a look, the oil leak has gone which is a relief. The garage had a bit of a mare doing it, the o/s gave the trouble took him 3 attempts to do it. What bemuses me is it's been with him on the ramp since Wednesday, he started it on Friday and dropped it round to me. I asked him does it need to come back for anything, he said no. If I'm getting the flickering can and the bong surely he did to! I've just started her up, rattly initially and then settles down. The oil can came on and the bong then went away. My man suggested I google Wynn's or an equivalent additive to help free up the hydraulic Tappets. Ths may or may not be right move going forward, Im hoping someone on the forum may be able to advise

Has it got a genuine Land Rover oil filter? I understand some have some sort of bypass valve in which if it doesn't work right can cause issues? Ive never had one of these engines, just thinking of the easy stuff. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

As yet I don't know, Im not really a spanner man. I've bought an oil pressure switch of eBay, and was thinking of a K&N Filter but am open to suggestions. I've owned it about a month now, I don't use it every day but will in the winter months. It's had an oil and filter change in March allegedly, but the same eBay wide boy also told me the gaskets had been done! Simon Goodwin

the rocker cover gaskets may have been done just incorrectly, there a correct way to do it and wrong way..

if its not done right it will just leak straight away i would check its not leaking in spark plug wells aswell or will have more issues on your hand.

When replacing rockers covers there should be tiny amount silicone on certain points and torqued in correct order.

as for the low oil pressure, oil change to 0w40 and do oil filter change. ( again when changing oil filter make sure you click the new oil filter in correctly otherwise oil drains back to the engine when engine is stopped ) which means low oil pressure at start up as runs dry for few seconds. even an engine flush before draining old oil would be what i would do but everyone has the own option on oil engine flush.

if still doing it replace sensor first. and next step would be checking the oil pump and gets more involved 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

My mechanic told me he would need it for two days to do property, and I know it was something he had a struggle with in particular the o/s. I've got a good relationship with him so between us we will sort it out. I'm happy with my Range Rover, for what it cost I'm expecting a few things to sort Simon Goodwin

I've been doing some phoning around today in relation to the Oil Pressure problem. First to say it's rattly from cold and then quite quickly the revs drop and the engine smooths out. There is a ticking noise. I called a Land Rover specialist who referred me to an LPG specialist, a chap named John. I explained the fact I'd not long bought it and have had the cam box gaskets done. I also explained that one week ago it developed the low oil pressure stop engine warning. I told him it was rattly from cold, he came back with timing chain issues and it looks I've got a big job to get fixed. I was wondering if anybody has got experience of this issue? Can I get away with replacing the tensioner. Any advice would be appreciated. I purchased a warranty from warranty first if anyone has experience of them as well I'd be grateful Simon Goodwin

Use the Search on the forum there is good info on the disintergration of the 4.4 timing guide disintergration. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I got quoted 8-9 hours labour for the timing chains. I'm going to see this John at Cargas on Thursday. I hope my warranty will pay out Simon Goodwin

They usually end up in the sump, could they be blocking the oil pickup? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If you're planning a long term relationship with your FFRR then DON'T buy parts from eBay. They are cheap pattern part that sometimes work for some of the time, sometimes fit but usually with a lot of fettling and never last as long as original parts.

Get a genuine BMW / Land Rover switch and oil filter and oil change

Don't use a K/N filter as the oil on the filter sticks to to sensors in the inlet and will cause it to run rough

And last but not least have the LPG kit removed as they are not a good choice for that engine as they run too hot on gas and the piston tops break away , I've seen what happens a few times now onto no6 Range Rover
