It limped then it died (many times)

So after a day or so of the fuel gauge playing up and reading zilch tonight got more interesting. Went out tonight and noticed a slight hunting and lack of immediate power , after couple of miles engine cut out (man that steering is heavy when you are trying to avoid obstacles without it). Pull over and starts right up with no issues but then repeat within the mile, engine hunting then cuts out, repeat etc... Limped it home, now considering A. Setting fire to it B. Remortgaging and repariring it ? Any ideas ?

Find the reason for the fuel gauge playing up and it may well fix the low on fuel condition that is programmed to allow the engine to restart and run for a short distance before cutting fuel again.

Look for the easy (cheap) fix first - put some fuel in as it sounds similar to what would happen if you ran out.
If that doesn't work I'd get the fault codes read to look for a clue

The fuel gauge started playing up a couple of days ago, knew I only had around 100 miles left so filled it up yesterday. So could this be a self preservation thing that it thinks it actually has no fuel. Not been any distance since the gauge played up but did a ten mile run yesterday when it started happening.

Yes, it's trying to prevent the high pressure pump from running dry because that would destroy it. The same precautions occur with the 3.0 T/SDV6.

So lumpy running and cutting out could all be explained by the low fuel warning ? After a search I've noticed that some are ignoring fixing no fuel gauge and running round like that, how ?

I know Censored all about it - but in answer to your question it would depend on where the fault lies - if it's a dodgy gauge or cable to the gauge then you could ignore it - if its some sort of sensor that also reports to the fault to an ECU then there may be knock on effects as seems to be the case with yours.

Don't confuse symptoms and root cause.....

Low Fuel Strategy
The engine control module (ECM) is programmed with a strategy which shuts the engine off before the fuel tank runs dry. This
is to prevent fuel system damage by air being drawn into the high pressure fuel pump.
For additional information, refer to: Electronic Engine Controls (303-14D Electronic Engine Controls - TDV8 3.6L Diesel,
Description and Operation).
A misfire is induced when the fuel in the tank reaches approximately 0.25 liters (0.06 US Gallons) of useable fuel remaining to
alert the driver to this condition. The engine is shut down when the fuel in the tank reaches 0.00 liters (0.00 US Gallons) of
useable fuel remaining in the tank and 4.0 liters (1.05 US Gallons) of un-useable fuel remaining.
To reset the fuel strategy after engine shutdown, it is required that a minimum of 4 liters (1.05 US Gallons) of fuel is added to
the fuel tank, when the vehicle is on level ground. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Scotland 2003 Range Rover SE Td6 Epsom Green

Symptoms similar to my TD6
Fuel pump starting to fail due to bad fuel.
Filter clogged.
Changed pump and filter and brand new again.
Dont know if petrol same but I am guessing canny be that much different.
Mind you, it is a Range Rover so it could something completely different.

Corroded wiring in the fuel sensor, not too bad to repair for the wallet around £200 at a specialist. And a bonus thrown in,DRLs now activated 👍
