Is there an issue with MY17 front windscreens

Delivery of my new AB was delayed because it picked up a stone chip in the glass whilst going to be fuelled. They loaned me a MY17 AB while they waited for a new screen (which took 2 weeks) and it had a chip in the windscreen. My new car got delivered on Monday and today it got a stone chip with only 178 miles on the clock.

3 MY17 cars with stone chips appearing in 3 weeks - that is more stonechips than I have had in the last decade.

What on earth is going on?

Sorry to hear your problem. I've had a few 405 and never a chip.

On a different note, we had French doors for twenty years and no problem, no matter what birds flew into them. Changed them and two days later a "Dove" flew into one and shattered the double glazed unit which should be hard to do with a baseball bat. Big Cry

I mentioned this on another thread.

My first two Sports had 6 new screens between them.

My first 405 had numerous small chips.

The loan 405 had a crack appear.

My 17 plate picked up its first stone chip 3 weeks ago. Thankfully it was just repairable and is hardly noticable. This chip happened on a motorway, travelling at 60mph (camera enforced). No traffic in front and no traffic on the opposite carriageway.

I think in an effort to reduce weight / cost, the screens have been reduced in thickness to an absolute minimum. Therefore they are now more suseptable to damage. Previous

Picked up a 20p sized crack within 800 miles & yes I think they're low quality glass as what struck my windscreen shouldn't have left even a chip it was that insignificant.

Not sure if it's due to the heating elements, but definitely not the strongest windscreen glass. Paul

I only ever had a chip in one windscreen before I got my Range Rovers and I then got several in my L322 and a small one in my L405 , I decided that it must be because they have heated front windscreens and that for these to be effective at defrosting, they have to use thinner glass than in cars without this feature. Just a thought. Steve
