Smoke or vapour? I only ask as i had the exact same experience, but it was the cold air coming from the air vents causing the visible vapour. |

It was smoke/vapour in terms of being white coloured and clearly visible with the burnt oil smell. I don't think something like water mixed with air as it was quite heavy smoke and the smell was bad.

I get a burning oil or a diesel fume type smell when I reverse back into my drive sometimes - it's more noticeable after a longer run.

Thanks GAC23. Whereabouts is the DPF located? If the back of the engine as the PCV on the petrol or similar position then I guess it suggests the fumes can make their way in.

Fully aware Stan; just wondered if it was in a similar position to the pcv on the petrol as I said. |

How about blower fan or Final Switch Relay (fsr) going bad?. Is it burnt oil or possibly burnt wire insulation? |

It does have an oil smell which although I would have initially said burnt trans oil my father in law was in no doubt it was engine oil and I have to bow to his 'nose'. I do think right though and if the theory of the pcv/pipes dripping in that direction, I can see how reversing would create the draw.

Just reverse is what confuses me. Seems if the PVC lines or any other lines had enough leak to produce white smoke in enough quantities to overwhelm the cabin air filter you would see it in forward too. Have you tried recreating it, quickly parking, and popping the hood(bonnet) to see any smoke in the engine bay? |

It is possibly lightly there all the time, but the visible smoke was when reversing and the smell does also appear stronger when going backwards too. It's less with the central vents closed. The engine (and heater regardless of setting) does seem really hot but it's within parameters when checked (the engine that is). No visible smoke from under the bonnet.

My theory is you have an oil leak on exhaust or manifold. Backing up keeps the airflow from moving the smoke out of the engine bay. If you are convinced it is an oil smell it probably is. If it reduces with outside air cut off it is coming from outside the cabin. These engines run hot but generally oil to smoke needs more heat like the manifold or exhaust pipe. Find the stains on one of these. Also try lifting hood(bonnet) and drive backwards after the engine has been run for a while. See if it reduces the cabin smoke. |
