It can't really be done hardwired while keeping the heated wheel. The slip ring only has a limited number of tracks and they are all in use if you have the heated wheel. I came up with the wireless solution as a work around for this limitation, I have been using it for the past 5/6 years without any issues, not even had to change the batteries in the transmitter yet!

Thanks for the reply mate. Hmm might have to do that then...


I just re-read the thread and there was talk of using the same 12v for the steering wheel controls and the heated wheel, thus freeing those existing wires and tracks. Because the wheel and the control have their own independent power sources, you could essentially stick them both on one 12v. 10amp fuse was enough for the wheel and buttons but you could add an extra inline regardless....

Ok you loose the wheel controls if the wheel blows its fuse, but how often does that really happen....

Just think this is a much cleaner install Jordan

You would need an extra 2 tracks on the slip ring as the heating element has 12+ Gnd and data, and the paddle shift system needs 12+ Gnd and 2 datas (basically Gnd connections for up and down shift)

Hope this makes sense, keep me updated on how you get on if you managed to hardwire

if i can remember i used the ground for the air bag for one and the live for the switches for the second V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Retrofitting a 2012 steering wheel on 2008

Hi all. A newbie here. Can i retrofit a 2012 vogue's steering wheel on 2008 vogue? I know the paddle shifters can be installed after a little modification of thw wiring but the control switches is what bothers me. Would the nav and other controls function similarly? I mean is it a bolt on setup?

Pretty sure the "bus" systems are different so no you can't swap the airbag and switches, I think the bare wheel is the same though but you would have to check... Pete

I actually want to put the 2012 instrumental cluster and the 2012 steering wheel. Paddle shifters aren't needed but would be nice if i could manage the wiring. What i don't know is that whether or not the control switches can be installed on 08

You can't fit a 2012 instrument cluster to a 08 L322. The MY59 L322 use a virtual instrument cluster and had a complete change in terms of wiring and CAN BUS. Pre MY59 vehicles use a 29bit CAN BUS whereas post MY59 vehicles use an 11bit CAN BUS network. The two are not interchangeable.

You can fit a 2012 steering wheel to a 2008 L322 although you cannot use the airbag or steering wheel controls, you will need to use your existing steering wheel controls and airbag. You can do the same paddle shift upgrade that i developed on your 2008 vehicle. You will just need to trace and locate the microswitch wiring for the shift up and shift down on the gearstick and wire the RF transmitter into these.

Anything after mid 2009 uses the new system, only the older style steeering wheel controls will work with you vehicle.

Hello Matt

Sorry to drag up an old post but I need your help, basically I'm trying to use your expertise video and post but I can't seem to get it working, just to mention this isn't for a Range Rover, it's for a Mitsubishi fto and these can be done as I've tried and tested with bigger micro switches, the ones with the metal clips that move to the open or closed contact when pressed, is there any other way that I could make it into a switch with the Range Rover paddle shifters, even if it means adding wires! Please excuse my poor knowledge in electronics 😀 Hope you don't mind me asking about this, cheers
