So this potential ban on diesel vehicles in cities must mean Land Rover will produce some better petrol engines for the FFRR then. Whilst the 5.0 S/C is a fine motor, it would hurt a lot of people at the pumps. The 3.0 S/C doesn't have enough torque to keep it the lazy drive it is, and it seems diesels are going to be forced off the road.

What about the ever increasing amount of trucks on the roads? Literally millions of them with engines much larger than cars. My old Iveco Turbostar (and if you remember them you really are old LOL) had a 17.4 litre V8, most of the Dafs and Leylands have some variant of the 11.6 litre engine and so on. These things must be having more of an impact than cars, especially when so many of them are being driven 24x7.

Anyway, the car manufacturers in general are going to have to come up with some pretty special petrol engines to get people out of diesels. I've tried the LR Ingenium 2.0 litre petrol and it's not a patch on the equivalent diesel. It feels really gutless in comparison.

So for someone like me living near the New Forest and unlikely to drive into London in the near future or at least never more than once in a blue moon should I not consider a TDV8 and stick to my petrol V8 with lpg?

the railways should have been expanded back in the sixties, but there was more money and employment to be made from tax on the hgv.
instead they closed loads of stations and branch lines. Only now they realise the potential of the railway's.
I fear there will only be one loser, as usual, US.

What about black cabs in most cities ? Protesting about Uber when they're predominately cleaner cars. People won't tackle them as they protest and block cities. Usual thing to attack the easy targets.

The figures given for the number of lives supposedly lost through poor air quality pales in to insignificants when compared to thelives lost through MRSA in our hospitals. its the great squeeze the motorist con once again.

In yesterday's Sunday Times, it said that a VW Polo Diesel had 13 times the NOx emissions of a large HGV. This was something to do with High cylinder temperatures and less sophisticated emissions control on small vehicles.

Does anyone know how the TDV8 4.4 compares, or what the NOx emissions are? 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

Oops - got that wrong. The polo 1.4 tdi diesel has emissions 13 times higher than EU emissions regulations allow, and “Its emissions of 1.2 grams of NO2 per kilometre were the same as a fully laden diesel truck with a 13-litre engine that we also tested.”

Given that the Euro 6 regulations are:
Euro 6 September 2014 0.5 CO 0.080 NOx 0.005 PM

13 times 0.08 is 1.04 mg of NOx per Km, which is worse than Euro 2 limits, so well over 10 years out of date. Why on earth are VW still permitted to sell them?

HGVs are known to have much higher usage levels of Ad-Blue, or diesel exhaust fluid to call it by a non brand name. Perhaps that might be a good way forward in the interim, set the levels of injection much higher to bring down the NOx emissions. Either way I don't see a mass scraping of diesels as being a good thing, especially when it uses so much energy to actually build a new car. Much better to make existing engines cleaner and use up more of their natural life.

More to the point, as mentioned above, Buses and Taxis should not be exempt. They can all be re-engined with Euro 6 compliant power units and control systems when you consider the numbers involved. LTI Taxis all use the 2.7 non turbo diesel as fitted to teh Ford Maverick and Nissan Terrano. There must be a Euro 6 version of that by now. As for Buses, new ones will have a cleaner engine, just retro fit these.

The continually published figure of 9000 deaths attributed to respiratory problems due to pollution in London is wrong.

It's actually 6400 according to the last government figures.

BUT this includes all respiratory deaths, even those caused by lung cancers due to smoking, emphysema, pneumonia etc etc... The government makes no distinction between causes of deaths or keeps more detailed figures.

I'm not denying vehicle emissions cause pollution but there's a hidden agenda at work here, and it's to raise money.

A fine example is the recent parking charge increase for diesel vehicles in camden, N london. This doesn't penalise or stop any amount of heavily polluting diesel vehicles from driving through the borough, it penalises diesel vehicles which aren't producing pollution.

My LPG powered Range rover used to be congestion charge exempt but Boris put a stop to that in 2012. Will they allow non polluting LPG vehicles free entry into the zones in the future... what do you think. No prizes for guessing correctly.

Are they going to ban cruise ships ?
