Insurance database - please help if you can

Right, so I'm on the verge of taking delivery of a new (to me) L405 but having a complete nightmare trying to insure the thing. I've tried A Plan - not competitive. (860 against 400 last year) and they are manually fudging the system for the vehicle type

But, almost every other insurance company I try, including the comparison sites think it is a Range Rover SPORT, which is clearly is not.

I have checked the V5C - correct. Listed as a Range Rover Autobiography SDV6 HEV (it is a Hybrid)
Called DVLA - correct. Listed exactly as on the V5C which you might expect seeing as they issue the V5.

Even when I try to select the car manually rather than using the registration number this model isn't listed. The closest I can get is
Range Rover Autobiography Hybrid SDV6 LWB
And it's not a long wheelbase.

Does anyone know who exactly holds or maintains the data these insurance companies use please? I desperately need to get this corrected or I can't buy the car.

Thanks

Dom

It appears from some research that all the insurance companies use Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) as the database for confirming vehicles have insurance as do the Police and DVLA. Have you checked your new vehicle on their site
http://ownvehicle.askmid.com/
To confirm the details they have ? It could be that it was originally entered on the system as a Sport and thats why it is coming up as one. If it shows on their database as a Sport when you check then you would like to think a quick phone call and probably a scan of the V5 could rectify the issue.
But in reality it will probably one of those conversations that goes along the linea of "the computer says its a Sport - sorry your computer is wrong - computer says its a Sport - but its wrong - sorry sir the computer says its a Sport.

Good Luck ! 2008 TDV8

Hmmmm, well appreciate the link.

So it says:
To update your vehicle details on MID, please contact your insurance provider as only they are able to update the record that appears on the MID.

Insurance company are insisting it's a Sport and refuse to update the details. Chicken/Egg. Rolling Eyes

Asking them to do it on the chassis number now. Their underwriters have to confirm this is acceptable but if so there is flatly no excuse from them to refuse any potential claim. What it does do though is snooker me as far as the comparison sites go. Everyone thinks it's a bloody Sport. Oh the stigma Shocked

Assuming I can get cover for the remainder of this policy I will send them a copy of the V5C and also the full build sheet from Land Rover so they then have to update their records.

First world problems I know, but irritating nonetheless.

Well, don't know if this is any help but when we were trying to insure the new Ewok the insurer's computer thought it was a Disco, (which had previously had the private plate). So they just over-rode it. Admiral. Had to talk to a person but they were friendly and helpful. Graham

I've had that with a private plate before - but sounds like that's not an option for Dom as the model doesn't even exist as far as the database is concerned.

Dom - maybe just ask MIB to add the new model & worry about the correct identification of your car later ?

I ended up using Landrover Insurance, reasonably competitive and a high level of cover. If anyone can understand the difference between an RRS and a FFRR you would like to think that they will. Probably not but it might be worth asking them.

Another thing to do it to take the free 7 day cover from LR insurance and see which vehicle they think it is for that.

I tried them. Nope, they also think it's a Sport. But they aren't actually Land Rover, just a broker nominated by Land Rover.

Experian confirmed what the DVLA have so this really is weird.

Meh, beer O'Clock. If they want to sell it I guess they will sort it. Can't buy a car I can't insure now can I Laughing

Is it possible an RRS is driving around thinking it's an FFRR? Would a dealer fitting the wrong plates to two cars cause this situation.
I once bought a new car with different number plates on the front and rear, only one digit but enough. Fortunately I noticed iit a couple of days after picking it up. Turned out an identical car sold at the same time by the same dealer had a similar number plate setup but reversed.
