Thanks, I have done some searching around but can't find a list of what it will actually do for my RR, it is more for any enhancements / changes so I can decide if it is worth spending the money...will keep looking.....

It will read/clear faults - so helps with diagnosing any problems

It also allows you you edit the Car Configuration File (CCF) so you can change various settings.

There's basic details here and a few more clues here

I think most people buy them with a particular first job in mind - mine was to help diagnose TPMS issues - and I eventually just disabled the function on the car (using the tool).

How do you work out what is in your car that hasn't been activated, IE what is there but not activated by the dealer but can work with the IIDtool ?

With the tool registered to your VIN number you can access the CCF (Car Configuration File). There you have a list of what is in the car showing whether it is activated or not.

You can "fine tune" what you want with the CCF. As an example my car came with the warning "bong" for when the door is opened and the key is in the ignition without the engine running. I (like others on here ) found it to be a bloody nuisance and disabled it.

What I could do with is a list from my ccf file that shows everything that could be enabled, but if I buy the iidtool and it says that everything is enabled that can be, then I have wasted my money unless I use it to "tweak" settings which does seem quite appealing,

I fear that is rather missing the point of why the tool is recommended by users on here. The tweaking of the CCF is pretty much a one off exercise. You set the car up as you want it and that's normally about it.

However, as will inevitably happen with a RR , faults will occur from time to time. The tool gives the opportunity to diagnose the faults and, often, correct them without further recurrence. RRs, like most modern vehicles, are a collection of electronic devices which, almost inevitably, have glitches when there is no underlying fault.

However, if there is a fault identified, it may be one that you can correct yourself with, depending on your level of expertise/inclination, minimum effort and cost.

On the other hand, if you don't wish to carry out any work yourself, then it is very useful to have the relevant information to hand before approaching a garage.

Personally, I try to do as much work as possible myself and the iiD tool has more than paid for itself in time and money saved.

I have the bluetooth version for my 2012 Westie and its a great piece of kit.

I have used a number of diagnostic software systems on my own cars for some years and they are invaluable for checking and clearing faults, interrogating components and, in many cases, changing settings. Over the years I have probably saved several thousand pounds in garage costs and it was always nice to be able to challenge the service guys when they tried to fob me off with something

Anyway, back to the point, these tools are only as good as the software that's written for them and in the case of the GAP one, in my experience its up there with the best of them.

Yes, it seems like a lot of money, but I think it is great value IMHO.

Have a search through this site and you will find many posts of FF owners who have been able to get their fattie going again by plugging in the IID tool and resetting something.....the alternative being a long wait and recovery on the back of a truck

Lots of us always keep them in the car for emergencies....
