I know I'm leaving myself open to all the wisecracks you chaps are gonna chuck at me, but here goes.
Off to Amsterdam for a long weekend in a couple of weeks, with the good lady and some more mates and wifeys.
Never been before, what's best sights
Eating, drinking, and general things to do.

I have just been with the wife, last weekend.

Plenty to see, lots of museums (not my bag) Using the trams is a good way to get about. (need to buy a temporary ticket) Mind I saw many people not swiping on and off the trams

You can walk forever and see some thing new everytime

If you are going to partake beyond passive smoking, I am lead to believe smoking is better that eating "Space cake" and as an example a woman on the plane home had eaten cake and was ill for 5 hours........

The beer is much cheaper in a locals bar, rather that the hyped bars. Regards

You'll love it, fantastic city,

Anne Frank is good, as it Madame Tussaud, go on a canal boat ride, take you good lady to casa rossa,{pink elephant) it a live sex show its a good laugh, and of course check out the windows down the red light district, theirs even a sex museum which is quire good too.

The floating Chinese near Centraal Station was fantastic.

Not sure if you are flying or boat, but a train ticket from Schipol is @5.10 Euros each way per adult.

Note that there is an Amsterdam tax to be paid at the hotel (was @12-15 Euros) Regards

Agreed on the floating Chinese. It's very good and buzzy.

There are some great Indonesian restaurants. Amsterdam seems to be a mecca for them.

The pancake houses on wheels are great. Have your meal somewhere and then find 1 of these for a sugar rush.

Many years ago I went to the Alakmarr cheese market which was good fun. Not sure what days they do their thing but worth it if your trip coincides.

I am a real "Amsterdammer" born here and living here.
Of course it all depends on your interests.

Some general tips:
Have a look at the Nine streets, go on a canal cruise, rent a bike, see the Rijksmuseum, van Gogh museum and/or the Stedelijk museum.
Visit the Zaanse Schans (outside Amsterdam) to see the windmills.
Have some raw herring at a fish stand.

I was there in September. I have a Dutch girlfriend. It's a great place, you'll have a great time no matter what you do. Make sure you try the Indonesian cuisine. You don't need to go to a posh restaurant for some great nosh.

Try these foods:
bitterballen
ossenworst
appeltaart
patates frites with mayonaise and/or Kwekkeboom kroketten in a snackbar

Indonesian food is definitely worth a try. Have a "rijsttafel" at Sama Sebo. It's on Pieter Cornelisz Hooftstraat 27 near all the museums (P.C. Hooftstraat is Amsterdam’s smartest shopping street).

Have pancakes at the Pancake bakery, Prinsengracht 191 near Anne Frank’s house

Visit the flower market on Singel

Dam square is Amsterdam's central square.
The Bijenkorf department store on Dam square and your wife will probably like it.
When you are there definitely visit this http://wynand-fockink.nl/en/ for a great tasting tavern and liquor store just off Dam square.

Heineken is Amsterdam's most famous beer. You can go on a tour of the brewery.
Amstel bier is another well known beer. The cafes usually have a large selection of beers.

Tip is to pre-book your tickets for the Anne Frank house as you can then just walk past the queue for general admission.
