There are good Un's out there. But they are out numbered by lazy workshy layabouts. Choose carefully, but always make sure you are actually increasing your throughput, and turnover otherwise there is no point.

I tend to take chaps on for a few weeks to evaluate them to start with, probation period if you like. That way it's easier to see how they fit in.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thats what I do too, three months probation. Always have.

Took an older guy on last year, similar age. My business is contract service so weekly visits. This bloke really got through some work. Very happy, kept him on, paying him quite a bit more than anyone previously as he was so productive and I saw a long term career path in him. Have employed many varying types over the years at varying £ levels. Almost all of them have been okay but "its just a job, I am more important, I'm doing you a favour by turning up" is the standard attitude these days.

Holiday time is always the worst - there's been times in years gone by that I have been on the phone every day from abroad, checking in with staff, dealing with the usual client noises (very common for clients to use gaffer absence as a spurious excuse for a moan/complaint - not just in my sector). So no holiday at all really, and the nature of the job is that it's not possible to just close down for 2/3 weeks. This new fella, I felt relaxed for the first time ever. Quite odd, quirky, but experienced, and on the whole I felt confident. So arranged other staff hols and mine with a week's crossover where he was on his own, not too much workload as we'd got ourselves ahead beforehand. Checked in with him at end of the week by text, he told me all okay and no more texts as nothing to worry about - "relax, gaffer, all is good". He went off on hol straight after.
Came back to the most incredibly unexplainable complaint imaginable. I won't go into details here but in terms of anyone who knew this chap - would simply not believe it as it was so utterly not his character. I was a very lucky boy indeed to retain the client (who really likes me) and that he didn't get reported to authorities. Long story short - I had no definitive proof, but during lengthy investigations I concluded that it was 95% likely client was telling the truth. An awful awful situation to be in. Thankfully, he made an error elsewhere which cost me a fair bit of money and it was such that I could deal with it "officially". Not long after that, mistake #2 = bye bye. Worst month of my business life that was.

I have major trust issues with people. Something as simple as fitting an oil filter incorrectly can destroy an engine, and leave you (well, me) £4K+ out of pocket

If I do it, I know its done right. And if anything does go wrong, I have no one to blame but myself

Tax bill and VAT bills are rather frustrating. Despite that, I think I'm better off than I was as an employee

Mikey, you're spot on.
I'm never convinced that I am better off than when I worked for a company.
It's not about straight earnings, its the fringe benefits that seem to make it worthwhile. Whether they stack up against the long after-hours hours, and the worry, is another matter! 2007 Vogue TDV8 with 255/55/20's fitted

The 3rd of January was a long time ago! That's when my Range Rover stopped working! Lots of different scenarios have slowed down the journey to MMP! It's been a few weeks since then but Mikey now has it and applying his magic! Went to see it today ( work has stopped pending Olympic Warranties sending an assessor) hopefully they will pick up the tab?? It's in a million bits, Took refuge in the box of brand new parts awaiting fitment, two new shiny turbos head up the box!
This guy has got work coming out of his ears! More land rovers there than at the dealers! Privelaged that my car is in the correct place !
Going to have it brought " Alive " before I take it home, hopefully next week
