I got R6NGC - which looks more Range-ish, than the old 2002 plain-plate that was on it, and from private sale at same price he got it for on dvla, £250, it's now not showing it's age, (as badly) with its face lifted exterior etc.... however, if you look on eBay, there are loads of dreamers, that think they are going to sell a plate, and buy a flat with the money. But, if you filter, and search for dateless, on auction, and no high prices, say price range i.e. £1-£510, you will find all the ones that are worth considering. Look through those, and consider one. Not many people will outbid others, as cheaper dateless plates, are not worth anything like their 'written valuation' Much better to get one on retention, as (I think) the assignment transfer price is already paid. So I think you just pay, £25 to paper transfer it? And nowadays, it can stay on retention, for 10 years, in case you don't use it. Much better than transferring it off an old car, via the seller. -which needs an MOT! (Seller just has to send off the retention, and it comes back to you, on retention)
Please don't make the mistake, like I did, of not telling the insurance at the exact time, and day, you put the new plate on, before driving it, I got sweeneyed, with blue lights, and car towed, even though it was insured. But their system wasn't showing it.

I agree john - lots of people around who think their plates are worth a fortune - I had a giggle at ebay earlier. When I bought Mrs JB's number a few years back (a proper old dateless one - her 3 initials plus three numbers) I used a north-eastern dealer called NE Number. A family business, real good service. Had a deal with them on it, think it was around £1200 at the time (she is special!). Found it advertised with four other dealers at £2.5 - 3k an similar on fleabay. So I was very happy. One other place to visit, periodically, if you go to newreg.com and under search there's a bargain registrations link, I think it's their trash/not wanted ones. Sometimes there are some decent ones, sometimes a load of tosh, but most are just £70. I got one for the mrs on there, it was a long time ago, and assume I paid the £105 transfer too. But it changes I think monthly.

Oh, and it's also worthwhile if buying from a seller, that it's not actually still available at dvla, i.e., he will buy it for you after you pay him twice as much. Seen that all the time,
