New tax rules

A friend of mine told me today that the roadtax on the fullfats were going up considerably in April.I have had a quick look online but it is not very clear as to what it will be .I currently pay £280 or thereabouts for 12 month as I have the '04' plate ,does anyone know what the new rate will be ?

If this is true, good job I renew at the end of this month!

Are they are about to start picking on Diesel users (after having told the car industry to make diesels) ? .

The highest tax band for vehicles registered before 23 March 2006 is Band K. For 2017, that means duty of £295 per year.

For vehicles registered after that date, bands L & M come into play. For us that means Band M with more than 255 g/km co2. The equivalent 2017 duty cost is £515. My 2010 TDV8 3.6 listed as having 298 g/km co2.

So keep hold of your 2004 and you'll save about £220 a year. I noticed that difference when I moved from a 2002 to 2010 model.

This is the kicker for most, the fact that irrespective what fuel/CO2 output you have from 1 Apr 17, if the car costs more than £40k then you pay an additional £310 annual premium on top of the usual tax... for the first 5 years!!

What's that got to do with efficiency and CO2 output?!

From Gov website:

New vehicles that cost more than £40,000
The first time you tax a vehicle on or after 1 April 2017 with a list price (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000, you’ll pay the rate based on CO2 emissions.

Check the list price with your dealer so you know how much vehicle tax you’ll have to pay.

After the first 12 months, you’ll pay a rate based on the fuel the vehicle uses and an additional rate of £310 a year for the next 5 years.

worked out that if you buy a 17 plate car then you are worse off over 5 years but actually after that it evens out so over a 10 year period the car will generate tax of less than what it would have under the old system.

Which is madness as cars now invariably are lasting longer and 10 years is not a stretch by any imagination There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I guess there is nothing fair when it comes to tax including roadtax.I have the Fullfat and my old van which I pay $285 I think each totalling £570.Bearing in mind I only do about 4000 miles with each it does not seem fair that someone can do 50,000 miles in a more efficient car and only pay £20 ,is roadtax not supposed to pay for roaduse?

Fairest way of all, scrap the RFL and put it on fuel. Recent estimates say it would add 2 pence per litre and the Gov would be quids in.
No more tax dodgers, no more bureaucratic paperwork and the more miles you do, the more tax you pay. What could be more fairer than that?

Common sense. Seems to be somewhat lacking in todays world.
