Why isn't there a Haynes manual for the ff?

Call me old-fashioned, but all my previous cars have been a treat to work on using a Haynes manual. I know there are plenty of downloadable manuals for the ff and you cant beat this sites wiki, but there was just something about having a large book precariously balanced on top of the engine with the relevant oil-stained page being held open by a couple of spanners. I suppose ff's were expected to be worked on by lr approved mechanics and not the average weekender. QUID FACIUM TIBI

How thick would the Haynes Book of Lies need to be to cover the L322 or L405?

To cover my daughter's Peugeot 405, we needed two Haynes manuals as each, albeit having the same part no., were different. Some info was definitely wrong and a lot was missing. Even then, the circuit diagram we needed was in neither but a helpful chap in the UK scanned the page out of his different version of the manual and emailed that to me.

Would I buy another Haynes? Probably not - except for the one for the Space Shuttle. Even the Tardis manual is out of date! Ron B. VK2OTC

Modern cars are too complicated for the average person, that's why. Even a basic hatchback has ecu modules which need diagnostics so less and less folks are doing their own maintenance. That being the case they wouldn't sell enough to make a profit.

They used to drive me mad when I used to work on cars,always the picture you wanted was not there,a little basic at times but still very good for the diy.I have a genuine manual for a series 2 landrover it is slightly bigger than A4 with two volumes nearly 4 inch thick together.What would an equivalent be for the Fullfat ?

My guess: two reasons.

One: The L322 never sold in the same numbers as, say, the VW Beatle. It was never meant to be transport for the masses. There needs to be a lot of cars out there to make producing the manual profitable.
Two: certainly when new, very few L322 owners would have done their own maintenance.

Are there Haynes manuals for other modern cars these days?

I think up to the 1980s it was common place to maintain your car, people tended to have less money and I guess for many it was the only way to keep a vehicle on the road, also cars were less reliable so needed regular work. Nowadays people tend to be less self reliant and the vast majority of people would have no idea of how to do basic maintenance on a car. Tends only to be enthusiasts who would bother.

Not sure that basic maintenance, changing oil and brakes is any harder on a modern car including a Range Rover than a car 40 years ago. You could argue there is more help now, like YouTube videos available. It's also easier to buy parts via the web. I guess the more complex jobs are much harder today.

You also have to remember that Haynes manuals were based on a complete strip down and rebuild of the vehicle. There's no way LR would have given them one to play with and they'd never be able to justify buying a new one because they'd only be likely to sell a dozen books..... Shocked

I have used Haynes for 30 years, and my father before that but more recent ones aren't as detailed as they used to be. And yes, they did have some cracking errors but on the whole were useful.
