I think I've read the GM transmission can make a smell when it fails. ______________________________

not being with the vehicle its difficult to diagnose something like this ..it could be a blown gasket to a racoon trapped under the exhaust but i hope you get it sorted.. ... - .- -.

it might sound daft but have you checked to see if a poly bag has got stuck on the exhaust ...it may be that it smell worse when reversing due to the change in air flow........i know....its a mad suggestion...but it happened to me many years ago....just worth a look.

Another random sugesstion - sticking brake caliper. Not often noticed in the cabin though and the smell is very distinct smell - think the smell from welding and its pretty similar. 2008 TDV8 |

Or possibly an oil leak dripping on the exhaust... Pete

Is you dipstick in place correctly. If the oil separator thingy gets clogged it can create crankcase pressure that blows the dipstick out and then oil gets sprayed around the engine bay.
