I'm new here. So, I gegin with my presentation:
My name is Antonio and I live in Portugal at the south side of the Tagus river (on the other side is Lisbon). I am 62 and retired from the Lisbon Airport.
At the moment I own a 2001 Disco 2 TD5 with 240.000 Kms. and tired of the lack of confort of the TD5 I'm about to change it for a 2002 RR L322 3.0 TD6 auto.

I've tried the RR and be came amzing with the handling of it.
Here at na independente LR garage and spares shop they told me that is very great car and no notice of malfunctions.
On teh several sites about I've read horrendous things about all the Range. From the transmision untill the suspension passing through the electronic even that this car is so expensive to mantain than a Rolls Royce.

Now my questions are:
What are your opinions, and what expects me?

Hi Antonio. I took the plunge and bought a 2006 L322 with 113k miles on it. It had a full service history and the owner was an ex JLR engineer who is now building Bugatti Veyron gearboxes.. find a car that has been well maintained and had an owner with mechanical empathy and it will repay you by being as reliable as any other car. Others will tell you that yes, they can be expensive but if you have a good independent specialist you can use or you can do work yourself then they become a reasonably sensible proposition. Take your time choosing a good one!

Thanks for your reply. I have 30 years of LR's from the S2A through the 200 tdi, 300 tdi and now the TD5.
I'm not a professional mechanic but I do all the maintenance in my LR's except remove engine and gearboxes because I don't own equipment for such heavier items. If I have room enough for a lift I'll do it with no fear.
Probably I bought an Hawnkeye diagnostic tool (what you recomend?)or similar as I did with the Disco 2 with Nanocom EVO.

Firstly welcome. You are in the best forum.

The secret to buying a good rangie is to select those with good parents who have loved them and looked after them. Dealer service is not a guarantee of excellence but a good service record is. Low mileage is not necessarily better than a higher mileage done on motorways.

I bought a 2002 7 yr old td6 with 76,000 miles which ran faultlessly for 3years until I sold it and then bought one off this forum which I knew the previous owners had looked after well. That is key.

Thirdly buy as much as you can for your budget. The Td6 and 4.4 (up to 2005) are BMW engines and thus solid, dependable units. However the GM gearbox in thr TD6 is very suspect and can give expensive problems. They need servicing every 80,000km at least.

If you can afford a 3.6 tdv8 then buy it as the engine, interior and equipment are so much better. However if you do only 5-8,000 km per year a petrol will be better.

Aim for 2005 and later as better interior/exterior design, build and electronics. . The td6 is a nice motor but let down by the GM transmission as they fail early. A trans rebuild will cost a lot. While running they are a nice tranny and motor combo. Look through the wiki page for what to look for.

Another good option is the 2005+ jag 4.2SC or 4.4 NA motors both with a ZF 6 speed. ______________________________

Many of us on here - me included - swear by the IIDTool from GAP Diagnostics. I don't know anything about the Hawkeye, but I know the IIDTool quickly paid for itself, and the After-Sales support from GAP is nothing short of brilliant.

I have visited Setubal as part of a holiday trip down the Duoro valley , staying in pousadas in Porto and Lisbon before heading south down the coast to the Algarve.
Longest trip I ever did in my td6 Vogue.

Same decision as I am making, currently running a D2 TD5 with 170000 miles which is uber reliable but looking for something a bit more comfortable, looking at a TD6 as an alternative
