Another thought, what about sticking with the current setup but adding a strong gas strut that will provide damping against the top pin latching thing you've already got? Or is it bouncing out vertically? Of the latter then it feels that the carrier itself isn't strong enough. Ed

looking great pete would love a set of bumpers like yours although id spray them be great for pushing ass neighbour car out of way !! would deffo be interested in them if ever for sale

We priced them up when doing them, if you want a pair it would be around £1,500...

Ed, it's all about levers, with the weight of that wheel and tyre (it's nearly twice as much as a standard one Shocked ) hanging on the back and the mount fixed to the rear wing, it flexes and rattles... no deformation if I stand on it but you know what they say about levers....

Thanks, if you prepare it properly and use the correct paint it stays in place no bother at all... Thumbs Up Pete

Fatty is back from the paint shop, bumpers off, both sides repaired and resprayed, the rest deep polished, just got to refit the winch/grille/wheel carrier and LPG filler, and give it a good clean...

Looks nice though, bodywork is virtually mint now...

If you haven't seen the "for sale" thread then you won't know Fatty is up for sale, I have so much on this year we are not going to be able to get to half the events I wanted to, we will however be doing lots of road miles so it's time to let Fatty go and buy a mileage car for now... Anyway it's about as far as I wanted to go with it and I'll get bored with it...

Just to put this thread to bed, Fatty has now gone to it's new owner in Hertfordshire...

I have jumped ship to a Lexus LS460, being me I bought a fixerupper and am knocking it into shape, if anyone is interested the thread can be found here....

http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/top...un-starts/

I'll still be about and if anyone needs anything just PM me... Thumbs Up Pete

Really enjoyed reading your FF thread and also your Lexus one, Pete.

I'll continue to follow your Lexus adventures. I'm no fan, though admit a sneaking and growing admiration of the original 400 that started it all. Si. <This is my name.

Whistle OOOOOO I miss that Toyota plastic wood, NOT! But having said that I do miss turning the key and not having any drama... Just because the screen of Doom couldn't think of anything to greet me with the car decide to drink all it's screen wash and BONG! was resumed Laughing

Good luck with the new toy Bud... just don't be tempted to swap it for the 4x4 versions, you will be dissapointed, they aren't as good as a fatty Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

It's real wood and looks a dam sight nicer than that plastic looking stuff I wrapped in Fatty... Whistle

I'd love to know what sort of stuff they use to cover it with as it's near bulletproof... every one I looked at, even a very tatty well abused one had pristine wood...

I know they got Yamaha to do the wood in the original 400 as their pianos are so nice...!!!

My mate had an Amazon, always thought it was OK... mind you he didn't try to kill it by towing 4,000,000 tons of other peoples Censored around..... Rolling with laughter Pete

The lacquer is something between fibre glass resin and the stuff that you used to cast dead things in to make paper weights and key ring lumps, as a kid.... They throw it on thick and then spend days sanding and polishing it flat a shiney.... so just think of it as super clear gel coat!

Rolling Eyes And you've got a mate who tows Censored about with a Landcruiser.... I used to do that... I found that the Landcruiser was very good as a lorry on the road, but unfortunately it performed like a lorry off road too, they like to sink Shocked
