Went to pick up the bumpers yesterday, what an appalling mess, I'm no expert but I think they didn't preheat the bumpers enough as there were big lumps of zinc on it where it had solidified before it ran off, and they also didn't skim the slag off the top of the tank before removing the bumpers, therefore pulling them through a skin of slag that gets deposited on the surface... all in all pretty poor, especially as I'd told them I wasn't going to paint them and I needed a good finish...

Anyway they are going to do them again which is a big job as they have to strip all this zinc off, so they will sit in an acid bath for a while... Pete

They look just like Defender bumpers.. well Series from what I remember.... they'll outlast the car and them some  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Finally got the bumpers back from the galvanisers, they had three goes at doing them and they were still far from good, lots of muck and detritus from not skimming the zinc before removing and just basically shoddy workmanship, had lots done there before with a great result so maybe I was just unlucky...

Anyway after a few hours of fettling they don't look bad... I've fitted them and will give it a while before I decide if they need painting or not... I do quite like the rugged look.... finished modifying the later front grille as well... a couple of sneak previews, I'm still waiting on the spare wheel carrier to come back from the powder coaters, yep, you guessed it, they baked it too hot the first time and boiled the powder rather than curing it... it was an accident, someone caught the temp control knob and no one realised... they are blasting and doing it again...!!! I'll then take some better pics....

A personal view, I would paint it. It's a bit too brutal for me. No offence.  John

it's very marmite... I like the look of them painted as it keeps the look of the standard FF, then again I like the rugged, different look... I doubt I'll get round to doing anything else until the weather warms up so I have a while to decide....... Don't like the chrome grille so may paint that first.... Pete

I think it gives it purpose.. plus how would you expect a paint job to last before it needed painting again.. even nylon coated wont be as hard wearing...

There was only one reason why LR stopped galvanizing the bumpers on the defenders.. cost, and they last too well when they are rust proofed  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

If its mounted through the small vertical tab you've welded on then it should stop movement in all directions and a rubber grommet on the wheel carrier should stop any unwanted rattle Current

New bumpers look very nice. I think they look fine unpainted. Yes, very 'heavy duty' but they'll still look like that painted. Any thoughts on protection for the light clusters?

Thanks guys some thoughts there, it's difficult getting something in stainless, boat chandlers are best but limited choice...

Haven't damaged a light in three years... as long as you don't fit posy light guards they are fine, all the guards do is get caught as a branch gets stuck in them, you keep going and it rips the guard off or smashes the light...!!!
